Caving to social pressure?

I’m getting my son (12 going on 13) a mobile phone. Yesterday I couldn’t get hold of him to tell him I’d be five minutes late to pick him up and he started walking and I missed him and he didn’t get home until close to 7pm which completely freaked. me. out. I decided it was time.

I’m going basic basic basic phone – possibly my munted old one – and the smallest pre-pay you can buy. After all this is for me, not for him.

Baby Shower

I went to my first baby shower this afternoon. Not having been to one I guess I was a little at a loss as to what to expect. I kind of thought it would be like a kitchen tea – you sit around and hand over some cute little useful gadget for the kitchen – so I bought a groovy little practical thing for the baby to be.

There was a lot of food. The table was groaning with it. The mother-to-be, Miss Lithuania – looked radiant and very pregnant (3 weeks to go) and the room was full of goodwill. This baby will be a happy one with all the positive energy around today.

But we didn’t open presents – although one girl was telling me of a baby shower where they all sat around and opened the gifts and they were very expensive gifts too – then you had to share a pearl of wisdom.

I guess it’s another of those traditions that we do just because they are “tradition”. I mean it’s not as if these days you don’t already have a gadget drawer in the kitchen chock full of peelers, garlic presses and apple corers by the time you get married, and likewise by the time you get to the hospital you’ve pretty much got everything. We are so much more affluent generally than our parents were.

So if it’s not about the gifts, what’s it for? I come back to goodwill. You all hope for and wish for the best.

I kind of wish it was the sort of thing you do after the baby’s born though… I would have liked a cuddle.

Feline was there and we decided that we’d offer our baby wisdom anyway – even though it’s a long time since we’ve had our babies – via our blogs. So be warned… just occasionally… you’ll see some baby wisdom on this blog…

The Orchid Hunter

Orchid HuntingMy resident orchid hunter wanted to show me the donkey orchids at Shenton Bushland this weekend. They were fabulous. Heaps of donkey and cowslip orchids which are always so lovely to find. Then at the Save the Children booksale we heard the Pink Fairy orchids were out at Bold Park.

We found them and some spectacular spider orchids – at least three varieties and donkeys and cowslips.

Eventually.

Dressing up

dressing upReading Thirdcat’s post today about Opinionated Boy and his decision or not to wear a pink skirt reminded me of the orchid hunter aged 2.

I had gone back to work and OH was cared for at my cousin’s house where we shared a nanny. My cousin has 3 kids the youngest about 2 years older than OH but they are in consecutive years (you get it? She has a birthday in January, OH is in November).

Somehow we had been given a dress – one of those tough Osh Gosh stripey ones – and OH decided he desperately wanted to wear it. I was in my new mother – I’m not going to be freaked out by gender stereotypes moments – and said sure darling – and off we went.

This in turn leads the man to get over this issue. viagra buy cheap 100mg online is frequently sold in online stores. levitra is also easily available online. order levitra online contain Vardenafil used in the treatment discussion. Who Killed Channel 9?

Just finished Gerald Stone’s book about the fall and fall of Channel 9. I suspect it has more resonance for eastern staters… in Perth Channel 7 is the powerhouse and Channel 9 well… doesn’t cut it. I can’t remember the last time they won the news ratings.

However it wasn’t that long ago that Channel 9 in Perth filled in their pool for cost cutting reasons and Kerry Packer was a colourful figure on the media landscape.

It was an interesting read and dealt with the period from 2002 to earlier this year. It was a bit of a hatchet job and I could hear the longing in Gerald’s tone for the Golden Age… as he continually referred to it. When money flowed and all that mattered was winning the ratings and being the best.

But I think the conclusion would have to be that in fact Kerry killed Channel 9, his beloved television station, through the management team he put in place at PBL. Seems a pity really.

In other news. My boy’s football team won their first game of the season today against one of the better sides. How does the team song go now?

Hugamuga and Groover have gone to Melbourne for the 12s Footy Trip…

Here are some photos… sounds as if they are having a great time. They saw a game at Docklands last night and are at the MCG now. They’ve toured the Essendon Hall of Fame, had a game with some local lads, gone on the MCG tour, seen training at the MCG and will go on to see AFL World.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Junior Poshi and I have stayed up late watching videos, seen the latest Harry Potter movie and spent a couple of hours after work in the studios having fun making film review podcasts… coming soon!

Oh. My. God.

So my boy came down with a sudden flu on Wednesday. He’s been hacking his lungs up. He’s had a high fever barely controlled by Panadol and this morning I hear this on the news:

Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth has experienced an influx of young patients with flu-like symptoms following the deaths of three young children this week. It has been confirmed one of them died from influenza A, and doctors suspect the other two died from the same virus. Two of them were aged two, one was four. They say that they do get deaths from the elderly and already infirm but it’s unusual to get flu deaths from otherwise healthy children.

Now my boy is 12 but he was really lethargic and sicker than I’ve seen him in years.

I rushed into his bedroom this morning just to make sure he was alive (!!) and he is. And he is even feeling better… slightly better… he feels like he’s improving.

Luckily he is the Vitamin C kid – eating more mandarins than I thought humanly possible.

And of course there is my chicken soup.

Perhaps one of the best remedies so far has been Mum’s essential oils. She came over on Thursday with a potion that we’ve been applying to the tops of his feet, chest and back and also inhaling and he is coming good. Now I just want to find my diffuser and get some more supplies in!

Chicken Soup and Lemongrass

Chicken SoupI’ve come home early today. I think I’m coming down with Hugamuga’s Flu. He was hit hard Wednesday night and has a cough that lifts the rafters. His slight frame seems too fragile for such a nasty cold. He’s been in bed ever since. Well… in bed, on the computer and lying in front of the heater eating mandarins mostly. I think a hundred mandarins is all he’s eaten in the last two days.

So I’ve come home early with droopy eyes and a thick head to make sure I don’t get what he’s got or for that matter give what he’s got to the rest of the troops. I can’t be sick as I’m stepping into my boss’s shoes (luckily a size 9 like me) for the next week and then I get a week off.

Bring on the Chicken Soup and then to bed. Cotton corner is calling.

Doctor Who

Just watched the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who… The Runaway Bride starring Catherine Tate. Brilliant. In fact turns out it’s the last of the old series and Saturday’s is the first of the new…

I kind of wish Catherine was always in it but will give the new girl a try on Saturday.

Having been named after a former Doctor Who girl I kind of feel a connection.

Okay I wasn’t exactly named after her, more like a spooky coincidence… I just like to think I was… Even though if I’d been her I wouldn’t have been as sappy. And, hopefully, I would have had better dress sense.

Finally tonight my son learned another of life’s little lessons. Empty your pockets before putting clothes in the wash and your mobile phone won’t get washed. He’s a bit upset. 🙁

English Homework

I’m actually emailing to let you know that we’ve begun to discuss the chapter questions for Mice and Men and whilst discussing the second question of Chapter 1 [your son] made a very insightful point about George’s benefit of having Lennie around; namely for protection, company and extra income. Leading up to the point [your son] made we had mainly been focussing on Lennie’s need for George, and so I thought [his] comment was a very intelligent and thoughtful one.

English homework has been a focus of mine over the last few weeks following a phone call from his concerned teacher who was worried she wasn’t engaging him. We thought perhaps it was non-engagement due to a lack of confidence in his abilities… and that perhaps some tutoring would help. Anyway as a first step I thought some coaching was in order so I was a bit of a homework nazi making him go back again and again and do the homework properly.

English seems a lot more difficult than I remember from school. The study questions she mentioned were really challenging and sparked a lot of discussion at home as to what they might mean. It helps having an interesting text.

I hadn’t read Steinbeck’s novella before. I really enjoyed it. What a great piece of work to get your teeth into as a year 8 student. Menace, friendship, murder and tragedy. I can’t remember the novels we did in Year 8 English at school… Tess of the D’Urbervilles rings a bell, and Pride and Prejudice but that might have been English Lit in later years.

One more point: Is there anything more fraught than emailing an English teacher? Thank goodness for spell check. 🙂
