It has taken nearly two years but finally we have got cable which means we can now use my old bakelite phone as the house phone.

Ahhh I am quite excited but the rest of the family, less so.

My new toy

Nice phone but no flash... wish I knew that before I bought it...

So I’ve got myself a new smart phone and what a timewaster it is.

It’s a Samsung galaxy and apart from the fact that it doesn’t have a flash, it is very gorgeous indeed.

I don’t get why there isn’t a flash though.

You would think every one would want a flash and I didn’t even think to check as I assumed it would have one.

Not very smart.

Still apart from it’s flash-less-ness, it’s a lovely device and I can see I’ll be most distracted by it in the weeks to come.

Frankly I’m blown away.

Answering Machine Etiquette

The other day I rang a popular cartoonist. He was the subject of an interview and we were trying to get hold of him. His home phone just had one of those generic Telstra announcements and was continually engaged. Grrr. The time had been arranged with his publicist and it was live radio. Anyway eventually I got his mobile phone and rang it. His voicemail was simply:

Leave a message *beeep*

Not too chatty then. This did not auger well for a lively interview.

But this post is not about his interview but his answering machine message, because of course then I went on leave and had to change all my answering machine messages.

What is the perfect answering machine message?

I think there are a couple of guidelines to follow:

  1. It can’t be too long. People get frustrated having to listen to a long message and might be paying International rates.

I’m rubbish at it myself. I hate checking the machine – especially at work. I force myself to do it every day. Which is odd because I am very good at replying to emails quickly and efficiently.

I’ve solved the problem at home through accident. Our answering machine is stuffed. Oh it answers the call alright but we can’t hear your messages.

Following Feline’s advice, I’ve bought The Orchid Hunter a new phone. It cost $199 and serves as his birthday present.

I took him with me to choose it – we bought it from Crazy John’s because the guy in the shop was so helpful and attentive and gave good advice I think and because Crazy John himself died this week and it was like I was wishing him well.

Bryan from Crazy John’s is leaving next week to move to Narrogin with his girlfriend.
