Keep Cott Beautiful

Seems the Town of Cottesloe read my post about the Michael Jackson litter campaign and decided to update their signage.  Hope it works although I will miss having a giggle at the old posters.

The weather this Christmas break has been beautiful.  High 20s to low 30s.  Crystal clear days.

Not what I’d call shark weather.  You know, those oily November days where the sea is flat and grey.

And yet it has been shark weather.  A fellow got taken off Port Kennedy and yesterday on our walk the authorities pulled everyone out of the water.

It was like a scene from Jaws.  A beautiful beach day with everyone standing on the beach or the groin looking for a fin.

Five helicopters were circling overhead.

We didn’t see the shark and walked home.

The power of song

Remember me telling you about this singing group?

I go past them on my walk every Saturday.

They meet around 9am outside The Blue Duck (this is the cafe in front of which Ken Crew was killed by a shark – remember that?)

Well today instead of power walking past them (*snorts* at thought of actually power walking), I turned around and went back to ask them who they were and why they sang every Saturday.

Turns out they are the Perth Ukelele Club and they have been going about 18 months.  It started with three people and gradually people joined and now they have quite a healthy group going.

They love the ukelele because it’s a really easy (apparently) instrument to play and quite a cheap one too – about $25.

The organiser – who wasn’t there today – has collected a song book of songs with the chords and they take turns to choose a song.

While I was working out whether to stay and prove to them I couldn’t sing or continue on my walk one of the group told this story.  She is a doctor and works in Emergency and this week she used singing to help cure someone:

So did I stay?

Of course!  We sang Bad Moon Rising, Bye Bye Love, Let it be, I have a dream, California Dreaming (harder than you think!) and many others.

Afterwards I walked home with a lighter step.

And I’m half convinced to buy us all ukeleles for Christmas.

White elephants and minstrels

Today I found it really difficult to get up.  I don’t think it was the late night – it wasn’t that late.  I went to see Rachel Berger at the Regal Theatre – which was fun because she got the entire audience to come up on stage – publicity hadn’t been that great and there was only about 100 of us in the enormous theatre.

Anyway it was hard to get up but Groover encouraged me with a few gentle comments:

“Get up you lazy lump of lard!”

“Are you still in bed?  I thought you were getting fit?!”

So I got up and we set off on our walk.

It was low tide down at Cottesloe today…

Which was unfortunate really as the Climate Change people were down the beach preaching global warming and rising sea levels and sadly for them… it didn’t look that bad…

They were also there preaching against nuclear power – yes it is the Premier’s electorate and a lovely setting for a rally.

We walked on – it was a beautiful day – the sun was shining, the breeze was offshore and slight…

We walked past the OBH – hang out of rural folk who head to the bright city lights – and of travelling Irishmen. Yes Ken, this photo was taken for you. 🙂

I talk occasionally about the rubbish left by people visiting Cottesloe – it’s a little bugbear of mine – but that’s not to say the council isn’t doing their best.  Although I think they have given up on the Michael Jackson campaign.

Do you think people would throw rubbish at Whacko Jacko if he was seen swimming off Cottesloe Beach?

Maybe that was the problem…

And today I thought I’d take a photo of a group of musicians who sing and play their instruments every weekend outside The Blue Duck.

I don’t know anything about them but I love the fact that they are there.

On the way back we stopped into Lemon Station for breakfast.  The food was excellent, if slow in coming and the orange juice sublime.

Did you know that Valencia oranges don’t go bitter like Navel oranges do when you juice them?  No, neither did I until this week.

To finish today a “Dad Joke” from Groover:

Did you hear about the group of kids who broke into an Asian restaurant and threw loads of fried food around for no reason?

Police are describing the incident as wonton vandalism.

Yep them are the jokes folks – have a great weekend.  I have to study my bridge system card now. I’m playing bridge for the first time this year (!!!) on Monday.  What a life eh?

Graffitti illusions

So my morning walks take me past this piece of art on the North Cottesloe foreshore…

And every time I do I think “Grrrr, some little toerag has spray painted that artwork!” …

But they haven’t.

I wonder if the artist intended me to think that?

An effluent area

I like to go for a walk along Marine Parade, Cottesloe, one of Perth’s premier beaches.

The other week I got up early to go for said walk.  It was the day after an early Summer day and at 6.30 in the morning the air was clear with the promise of a lovely warm day.

It was a little breezy and as I walked through the suburb to the beachfront the pages of a copy of “The Financial Review” fluttered past me.

A suburb of affluence I thought as I bent to pick up the pages closest to me.

As I reached Marine Parade I saw that the rest of the paper was scattered along the dunes, caught in the tufty plants that hold the beach sand together along the pathway.

I started picking up pages and as I did several other early morning walkers joined in.

It was lovely, a real sense of “this is a beautiful place and we want to keep it that way”.

We smiled at eachother as we put the papers in the bin.

I even found a bra caught in the bushes.

“How nice”, I thought, “to live in a place where people care about their environment.”

I continued my walk towards the main beach.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

As far as they eye could see the beach, the grassy banks, the footpaths, were covered with rubbish.  The bins were overflowing.

It looked like a rubbish tip, with seagulls wheeling overhead.

People were picking their way through papers, drink bottles, plastics to the sea to swim.

It was appalling.  Disgusting. Embarrassing.

I walked along the beachfront for about 200 metres before turning back inland.

I couldn’t bear to see the beach anymore.  I felt angry. Impotent.

Later that day the rangers came and raked the beach.

It had been a hot day.  Apparently 5000 people converged on Cottesloe that Sunday.

But in my opinion that does not excuse the behaviour.

People if it doesn’t fit in the bin – TAKE IT WITH YOU.

Floating in the Indian Ocean

Cottesloe Sunset

I’m floating in the Indian Ocean. The water is like a mill pond. My head is back, my limbs crucifixed. I can feel the water lap against my ears and in the distance, above the water, children playing, a car roaring past, the faint duuf duuf of the Cottesloe Hotel.

The water supports my body. A posturpedic mattress. The sun, gentle as it begins its downward journey one hour earlier.

I am at peace.

And yet there is the faint niggle of disquiet. How long will my family let me lie.

“Oh alright then.”

How could I refuse? This is my perfect swimming environment. Still and quiet. No waves.

Bliss.
