First world problem: glasses in the rain

I don’t know if you know dear reader, but I am now wearing glasses full time.

Four eyes

Which has been fine because the weather has been fine.

But today it rained.

And of course my glasses fogged up and got covered in raindrops.

Hmmm.

And of course those of you who have seen me daily wrestling with my overstuffed handbag to find my pass, keys, wallet, playing cards, headphones, phone, other phone, book, kindle, nail file, water bottle, book would realise that a quick dip into my bag to pull out my glasses case and get out the special little glasses shammy to clean them is just not possible.

Just another first world problem to put up with.

When I first got my glasses, some were kind enough to point out my resemblance to the character of Velma in Scooby Doo.

In fact, when I, AS A JOKE PEOPLE, used a photo of Velma as my avatar on Facebook, you commented “Great photo” not realising that it was Linda Cardellini.

My alter ego

I don’t even suit orange (although I do like that funky little utility belt).

Still.  It could be worse.

Original Velma

People who wear glasses – what do you do about the rain problem?

Love over gold

I was searching for a CD tonight.

And this is what my poor eyes saw.

Nothing.

I really hate the fact I need my glasses to find a frigging CD.

You see I knew I had Love Over Gold by Dire Straits.

It was one of the first albums I ever bought.

Yes on vinyl.

I think Complete Madness was the first and then Love Over Gold and that’s because a young man was obsessed by Dire Straits and he took me to the concert (at the Entertainment Centre… remember that?).

He was really into guitar playing and would play me guitar and Dire Straits and I thought he was sweet, although I wasn’t really into him.

I liked the music.

It felt rather cool at the time I thought.

You are probably spitting your coffee over the screen at this point but I did think it was cool.

I liked Dire Straits, Pink Floyd and Madness.

I was 16.

Anyway Love Over Gold was one of the first CDs I bought too.

I started buying CDs long before I had a CD player.

I could see the writing was on the wall.

And when our CD collection was stolen in 1994 I felt sure I would have insisted on buying Love Over Gold again.

Dire Straits and in particular this album was a favourite.

For goodness sakes it had only 5 tracks and one of them was more than 14 minutes long.

And one of them was Industrial Disease.

I knew all the words.

Classic.

The other Mark Knopfler CD I really liked was the soundtrack to The Princess Bride – my favourite movie.

So why was I so keen to find it?

Well today I heard a track and I could have sworn it was a Dire Straits tune from this album with new words.

Can’t remember the words or even the artist as I was so indignant that they should steal Mark’s work!

So I thought I’d better listen again to his fantastic guitar playing and remind myself.

Of course as I can’t compare them it is a moot exercise but I am enjoying the journey back down memory lane.

I’m 16 again (and saving myself for university).

Senescence

leaves2

I was over  at Mum and Dad’s today raking leaves.  They are away and we want to make the house look lived in.

It was another beautiful autumn day.  The sun glistening through the leaves, and onto the leaves that had fallen.

The many, many leaves.

It started me thinking about senescence… the crispy brown leaves crackled under my feet as I gathered them into piles.

Just like me, slowly getting older, more wrinkles, dryer skin.

Still it’s hard to resist a big pile of autumn leaves isn’t it?

And that inner child, just under the surface of that 42 year old skin, came out to play.

Eventually I had enough throwing leaves around. Bits of dead leaf had even worked their way down my jeans into my underpants. How does that happen?

I picked a few lettuce leaves from the vege patch and went back to my car.

When I got their the door was open.

My handbag on the seat.

Had I left the door open when I got my camera out?

Shit, I thought.  This is where I discover my wallet has been nicked.

It wasn’t in my handbag.

I felt sick driving home.  The hassle of sorting out my credit card again.  Oh and my cash splash cheque was gone.

The momentary joy of throwing leaves in the air forgotton.

When I got home I found my wallet on my chest of drawers.  Where I had left it after going out last night.

I made a salad from the greens picked in mum’s garden and sat outside in the sunshine.

So hot and so grey

It’s so hot.

So hot I can’t think, I can’t breathe.

The sweat pools under my breasts, slides over my stomach and drops on my thighs as I type, I’m sticking to the leather chair.

I can’t bear the thought of organising dinner, of even thinking about dinner, which might be a good thing except for the two teenagers who are hungry after their first day back at school.

I’m wearing a gossimer thin sarong tied in a knot above my breasts – it’s too hot even for cloth on my shoulders, for a bra.  And I’m wearing undies.

Frankly I feel over-dressed but my children became unexpectedly prudish about a mother cooking in the nude.

And to complete the misery not only am I about to melt like the Wicked Witch of the West into a puddle on the floor but I’m finally over my grey hair.

It’s so grey.

Ever since I read Going Grey last year, I’ve been on the road to letting my hair grow out, that’s partly why I got the short hair cut, but you know… I just don’t think I’m ready.

Bad enough that I need to be exercising more, controlling my intake more (note how I didn’t say the d-word), that I need to increase my reading glasses strength… I’m only 42 for crying out loud – I’m not ready.

I was watching Oprah last night – Mum taped the program and saved it for me to watch – and it was all about embracing your age – but none of the stars, guests that she interviewed had grey hair.  Not even any of the “real people” had grey hair – except for one sad grandmother who has suffered from depression ever since her kids left home.

I don’t want to be in the sad camp!

So I’m going to dye my hair again.  Get back on that treadmill of dyeing and roots and throwing money at the problem.

I’ll let you know how I go on Saturday.

Spring has sprung

The dying age

Heath LedgerIs it just me or are you overwhelmed by the numbers of deaths lately? This last two years in particular seem to be a never ending procession of young deaths – and not so young but they are kind of expected.

I’m wondering if it is my age. I’ve hit my 40s. Do I notice it more now?

In the last two years there doesn’t seem to be a month go by without another significant person dying.

Today it was Heath Ledger. Now I didn’t know Heath – yes even though I live in Perth, small as it is, our paths didn’t cross – although my friend’s girls went to the same school as his niece – but I was shocked just the same.

A fortnight ago Clinton Grybas died – sleepwalking apparently. I knew him about – crumbs – must be about 8 years ago or more.

Can it stop now please?
