Cottesloe in winter

by Cellobella on Monday, August 1, 2011 · 2 comments

A cold blustery morning at Cottesloe Beach
The beach has all but disappeared
And there is so much seaweed on the beach that remains.
Still the scenery isn’t all bad

I haven’t been down to Cottesloe in a while and I was surprised to see the beach all but gone.

I know it diminishes in the winter but I’ve never seen so much seaweed.

Still the walk down to the Naked Fig for breakfast was invigorating.

And the gale force wind pushed me back up the hill on my way home – bonus.

I had a chat to one of the trainers of the Hawthorn Football Club as well – who commented on the weather – I pointed out that even at its worst it’s warmer than Melbourne to which he agreed.

The boys were walking a bit slowly (wonder why… :) ) so we powered past them towards our coffee and some great service.

And I was glad I had decided against wearing my Dockers scarf.

Not whining about the endless summer

My two as the sun goes down

How can you complain about the weather when we can head down to the beach and enjoy a sunset like that?

Warm enough for my son to go swimming

It was my parents who suggested it – and what a good idea it was to go down the beach for fish and chips on a Saturday evening and watch the sun go down.

It made me wonder why we don’t go down the beach for twilight meals more often.

We even live closer to the beach than they do.

I’m not really the beachy type.

Maybe that’s it.

And once I’m tucked into my house of an evening it’s akin to winkling a barnacle off a rock to get me out.

Not easy.

Still it was lovely and if invited I’d go again.

I think.

Depending…

Sculptures by the sea 2011

by Cellobella on Monday, March 7, 2011 · 1 comment

red boy

This sculpture was tall… an oversized bright red boy. I liked this one. I would have liked to have seen it in a more prominent position.

Cottesloe Beach

This is the view from the end of the groin back at the beach, now sadly eroded. Usually the beach hangs around until winter… but it has been an unusual summer.

At the end of the groin (excuse the pun)

And this is what was on the end of the groin.

From the other direction

Quite a striking figure but one wonders if better placed at Swanborne…

The kiss (at least that's what I call it)

Loved this one.

Intimacy laughed at

This is one of a series of three – one with a straight face, one smiling and this one laughing.

Talk to the hand(s)

This was a whole bunch of hands on sticks.

Boy and camels

Solid reflections

Loved this one – I think it was a Danish artist.

Her cup overflowth

This was my favourite. She/it is so sexy. I believe another version of this was at Bondi a few years ago.

Man in boat

This one was also sweet. And yes there is water in the boat.

Sand shoes

And you’ve got to have whimsy.

All in all, another enjoyable exhibition. I would like to see another floating sculpture… they are always fun.

Oh and we downloaded Russ and Pete’s podcast which was an interesting take.

A cool tattoo?

by Cellobella on Friday, December 10, 2010 · 5 comments

I don’t normally take photos of hunky blokes down the beach.

Surfee dude types

Especially not ones who – lets face it – could be my sons.

I’m not the cougar type.

But when I spied that tattoo on his back… well!

Smiley face tattoo

My first thought was… are you kidding me?!

Who gets a smiley face tattoo.

My next thought was… have I missed a “cool” lesson somewhere?

So tell me internets – cool or uncool?

And then we went for a walk.

It had been a hot day.  Bushfires.  Windy.

So I thought an evening stoll en famile would be nice.

Cottesloe Beach

Fishing from the groin

When we got to the beach it was COLD!

Really windy.

A little… unpleasant.

So rather than a longer walk towards Swanborne – we headed for the groin.

A bit pathetic really.

The pylon with the smog of the fires on the horizon

Of course you can’t keep a teenage boy out of the water no matter how much you talk about shark weather…

Fun in the surf keeping an eye out for sharks

Winter sun

Cottesloe Beach in Winter

Oh I know we need the rain but there is something glorious about Perth when the winter sun shines across a barely populated beach.

When the sky is bluer than a summer’s day, uncluttered by leaves and verdant green.

Sure it’s a bit chilly in the morning, but the light my friend, the light!

I went to a photography course today at work.

There’s also something delicious about voluntarily going into work when you’re on long service leave…

“What are you doing here?”

“I thought it was you but then I thought no… she’s on leave!”

The envious rueful smiles, the smug smiles of others knowing they have LSL sitting there waiting to be taken.

It was good to be back at work today, firstly to see old friends and secondly not to do any work!

The course was fun and distracting, about a subject I am passionate about.

I love taking photos, and learning how to take better ones makes me more enthusiastic.

It has also inspired me to add to my growing lists of “presents I will one day buy myself” – yes I need a camera with manual controls… just in case, you know, I might actually want to experiment with aperture and shutter speed.

In the meantime, me and my trusty point and click will concentrate on composition, leading lines and angles.

(taps nose in a knowing way)

Oh yes, I am a photographer now.

Tasting Pink Zulu

by Cellobella on Monday, July 5, 2010

A couple of new restaurant/wine bars have opened near us and today we popped into one of them, Pink Zulu, to check it out.

The coffees were great as was the hot chocolate but for Dippity the highlight was the Zulu Rose dessert.

Almond and date filo coil, vanilla bean ice cream, rose syrup and fairy floss. 16

My favourite was the Kefta, complete with cinnamon stick… er stick.

Perfect for those of us on a carb-free diet.

Kefta lamb with harissa and minted yoghurt.  19

In case you’re wondering, those numbers are the prices.

Yes dahling, so vulgar to put the dollar sign don’t you think?

The food is not cheap but I can tell you it is delicious, and the Zulu Rose dessert is spectacular.

And… I like the decor, although I did have a private chuckle to myself when a patron arrived in a black and white animal print jacket… she quite blended in.

In flight

In flight

I took this photo down at Cottesloe beach.

You know the usual fifty photos of a seagull and then it takes off and you get lucky.

I love the feeling this photo evokes for me.

Taking flight.

The energy.

The upward momentum.

How good must it feel?

That Indian Ocean bite

by Cellobella on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 · 13 comments

You remember how the other day I was going on about how I needed that Indian Ocean bite to “wake me up“?

I am officially awake.

thenasty

I saw a stinger (small translucent square shaped jellyfish) when I was about waist deep, but Groover was already at the pylon and I figured that I had as good a chance as any to not get stung.

Doh!

“I’ve been stung!”, I wailed as I drifted around the back of the pylon.

“Oh don’t be daft – it’s psychosomatic”, said Groover, using a very long word for 8 o’clock in the morning.

It didn’t hurt that much.

A vague tingling and I knew it had somehow swum down into my swimsuit.

(goodness knows how – there isn’t even enough room for me!)

It was a short swim.

As Groover said this morning as I was trying to convince him to come with me:  ”What is the point?  It’s not like you’re working out!”

They are always short swims.

For one thing – it is FREEZING.

For another – I’m not that fond of swimming.

And now – there be stingers!

But that is not the point.

The point is: if I’m staying at home for the holidays I need to at least feel I’m on vacation.

Anyway.

Despite the copious amounts of vinegar applied, today I just feel stung.

And I’ve also just found out my sister and her family can’t make it home for Christmas after all.

Stung again.

Pylon wars

by Cellobella on Saturday, December 5, 2009 · 1 comment

It’s the first day of my holidays and to make it feel like a holiday and not just a weekend, instead of a walk by the beach I insisted we swim around the Cottesloe pylon.

I needed to feel sand between my toes and have the sharp bite* of the Indian Ocean wake me up.

But a shock was in store…

cottesloe-pylon

Those hooligans from North Cottesloe surf lifesaving club had been up to mischief!

You might remember not that long ago I commented on the fact that the pylon had finally been repaired.

Here it is in all it’s glory back in October:

Note the Cottesloe Surf Lifesaving club colours of yellow and black.

cottflag

I wonder how long it will take them to paint the blue and white of North Cottesloe over.

Meantime, we swam around the pylon. It was low tide and wasn’t quite the workout I had expected.

I can tell you that both the repair job and the paint job are not so flash from the other side.

* Not a literal bite obviously although that’s not an implausible conclusion. The area is known for it’s Great White attacks…

An expensive perch for one seagull

by Cellobella on Saturday, October 24, 2009

The Cottesloe Pylon has been fixed, just in time for summer.

pylon_close-up

Not sure what the final cost was but it was quoted at $170 000

I like the way the colours reflect those of Cottesloe Surf Lifesaving Club… or maybe they reflect the paint on the pylon?

pylon_fixed

I heard talkback callers saying they were going to jump off the pylon no matter what the authorities say.  I guess the authorities have to say you can’t but I kind of wished they had put a ladder the side and a little jumping platform.

Bloody lawyers put paid to that no doubt.

It was a much cooler weekend this weekend…

Here’s the difference at the same time last Saturday:
