The philosophy of weeding

Sunlight through winter trees
Sunlight through winter trees

On Wednesday, the weather was clear and bright.

The bluest of skies, the sun glinting through the trees.

I spent the day gardening.

Weeding can be therapeutic, don’t you think?

Firstly the physical act of pulling out a plant is satisfying.

It’s like you are removing all the imperfections of your own life.

Take that unpaid bills!

Poor game of bridge!

Annoying kids!

Nagging husband!

Fat thighs!

Then it is so good to look at the garden bed, smooth and perfect at the end.

Of course, as the garden bed becomes more and more perfect, you become less so.

Dirt marks your face and streaks your clothes, your nails fill with mud and crack, your knees start to ache and your back protests.

It makes me think that whenever I see perfection, I’m really looking at hard work.

That somewhere, like The Picture of Dorian Gray, there is a dirty, unkempt, maybe injured person – the agent of the perfection before you.

Nothing’s perfect.

And perhaps the most perfect looking things are the least perfect of all.

Even now, when I look at my newly weeded garden beds I can see the stubborn shoots of the odd weed poking their way out to taunt me.

I think I will let them grow.

For now.

Maybe life shouldn’t be perfect.

Life Lessons from Theatresports

Unfortunately my photo collection from Theatresports is somewhat thin, so you’ll have to make do with this image stolen from Facebook (hope that’s okay Jo):

Over the past few months Groover and I have been going to Theatresports classes and performances.

I’ve always loved the idea of Theatresports.

It seems so clever and so fast.

And yet so lazy!

You don’t need to learn any lines!

I love that.

So this is what I’ve learned…

1.  It is okay to fail happily

Failing means that you have tried your hardest.

If you never fail, you have stayed safe.

Being safe means you have never taken any risks.

Without risk, you will never move forward, you will not grow.

Failing happily means that you celebrate growing and changing.

The chance to succeed.

2. Pause

Pause in order to listen.

Count to three before you respond to give yourself thinking time, rather than thinking about your next speech/comment while the other is thinking.

Listening is the greatest gift we can give another person.

We… I… don’t listen enough.

It would set up a titanium place in Andhra Pradesh by 2014 entailing an financial commitment of about Rs 5000 Cr. to invest on commercial properties in FY17 and Milestone is in its levitra prices way to rise about RS 500 Cr. for the same. Men used to deal with extreme embarrassment buy levitra when quietly purchasing condoms from a person behind a pharmacy counter – and preferably it was a man behind the counter, as buying condoms from a woman was the supreme embarrassment. On the other hand, websites of pharmacy networks or retail pharmacies tend to provide the same medications at levitra sale higher costs. Cancer from the prostate regularly spreads on generic viagra the bones, generally resulting in bone pain. So often I catch myself waiting for a break in the other person’s conversation so I can jump in with my well formulated comment, when really I should just listen.

And when I do pause, I discover a lot more is being said than I realised.

And I wonder what I missed.

So… pause.

3. ….

(I’m pausing)

4. You are only there to make other people look good

And isn’t that true of life?

Yes, obviously it is YOUR life, but by supporting others around you, your life is enhanced.

For without their strength, you will end up holding the world up by yourself.

That’s exhausting and not so satisfying.

5. Keep it simple

In Theatresports the trick is to keep it simple and obvious.

Your audience has a set of expectations and they love it if you stay within that circle of expectations.

It’s why some of the best comedians are those who talk about everyday life – somehow the most obvious observations are hilarious when repeated back at you.

And don’t you think life is the same?

Avoid trying to be too clever.

People want to hear what you’re REALLY thinking, an honest response not some quick one liner.

Sure the gag is cute now and again, but it soon becomes wearing.

You can’t have a real relationship if you don’t have honest communication.

Conclusion

I thought I was learning about theatre, I was learning about life.

(I’ll be signing up for more life lessons later this year… find out when on Facebook.)

Drunk on life

This last couple of weeks I’ve realised something profound.

toodyay

Well… profound for me. 🙂

I’ve realised that I’ve made a mental shift from last year.

This year, I’m saying yes to life.

But more than that, for once in my life I feel as if I can set goals and make them happen.

Sure they are not huge goals, but last year at my lowest ebb, I could not even work out what I wanted to do, about anything.

It’s me time.

I guess the archeological dig was the first big thing.

I wanted to go on a scientific expedition – to get the feeling I got when I was 16 up in the Kimberley canoeing down crocodile infested rivers.

Yes that meant leaving my family for a week.

Imagine that.

Going away. On a holiday. Without my family.

!!

It was so empowering to do something just for myself.

Not a business trip. Not a family trip. No obligations to anyone except me.

I felt like I was back at Uni again.

Second – I booked Groover and I into Theatresports workshops (and performances).

I’ve always enjoyed drama but again haven’t done any since Uni.

It is so much fun. I can only think I’m an idiot not to explore this before.

🙂

Third, at work I have realised that what gives me the most job satisfaction and why I have always wanted the job I have now to the metro equivalent is I love being out and about in Western Australia.

I love the landscapes – so different from one end to the next.

I love the people.

I love taking photographs and sharing them online.

I love driving.

The other day driving back from Geraldton, listening to Mumford and Sons (my latest obsession) practically all the way back, it felt so good to be behind the wheel, in charge of my own destiny, winding my way through the coastal heath.

Four and a half hours flew by.

(Btw – that was four complete run-throughs of the CD plus many repeats of my favourite bits… ah but that is for another post… don’t want to bore you completely.)

I think you can see it in my face.

I feel like I am shining out of every pore.

I am in love with my life.

And I have so much energy.

Look at me.

Here at 6am on a Sunday morning blogging!

What’s up with that?

I feel fantastic and I can only hope that people around me can soak some of that up.

Hmm reading that back it sounds a bit manic.

I promise you I’m not a manic depressive.

Just drunk on life.

Which is a lot better than being hungover.

Oh I must tell you about last night before I leave you today.

Groover and I went out with some friends to the Oxford Hotel – nice makeover by the way guys.

Getting ready I was quietly going mental – all my clothes seemed so old and the girls going along were half my age.

In fact add their ages together and you get my age.

Gulp.

Anyway I pulled out an old but transparent top and wore my red bra underneath.

Yes a little bit racy but what’s the point of being slightly overweight and having a kick arse cleavage if you don’t take it out for a spin now and again?

Anyway long story short – I felt great – and even better when I heard the (was it surprise?) in one of the guys’ voice – You look hot tonight!

Yeah I did.

Take that young 20 somethings!

But maybe that was my “yes” light shining through.

I feel… dangerous.

Watch out.

Stopping to smell the flowers

Not that south west orchids smell – well not that I know of – but it occured to me today that I haven’t seen even one orchid in the wild this year.

In fact at all.

And I love these little treasures of the bush.

It makes me feel good to find them.  Feel good to know that they are there.

Are these the indicators that tell you your life is out of balance?

Maybe it’s the holiday season or maybe it’s Groover’s change in work.  His change becoming my change?

Or at least forcing me to reassess my life.

What are the indicators in your life?

How embarrassment!

Spring has sprung

This my lime tree – in flower again while on some branches ripe fruit hangs. I think it’s confused.

It really has nothing to do with this post except to say if you sucked on a wedge of lime your face might resemble the look on the person’s face when you say something – or do something really embarrassing.

Have you ever done that?

Something to this day you regret saying, that you would curl up with remorse, that you would really like to take back.

I’m sure there have been hundreds of moments for me but one that I will never forget is talking with a mate about the term MILF… you know…. Mothers I’d like to F….  Someone else (who I was sure was gay but hadn’t come out) came up and asked what we were talking about and this mate says… you know MILF – don’t you think Cellobella is MILF?  Oh, I say, I don’t think I’m his type.  What do you mean?  OMG I could have died.

Some very awkward backpedalling.

And as I said, a face like he’d just sucked something sour.

Lets not mention the “when are you due” question – THAT MUST NEVER BE ASKED!

I can even remember once canoeing with this boy I rather fancied… I was about 15.  He fell out of his canoe and I DIVED in to go to his aid.  When I came to the surface he was, of course, not needing my help (I’m not even a strong swimmer) and I back-paddled to look as if I was just going for a swim… as you do.

Canoes are for noobs, right?

Taking rainbows for granted

Guest post from Groover

There is an old proverb which says “The best place to hide a leaf is in a forest”. In other words, a nice way to say: “sometimes we fail to notice the things that are right under our nose”. I met a new Australian the other day who had recently arrived here in Perth from the UK and without knowing she pointed out a leaf in our forest.

rainbow

During the the usual exchange of ex-Pom niceties she said something which struck a chord, “I have seen more rainbows here in Perth in the past 2 months than in an entire lifetime of living in London!”. It’s true, the inclement skies of Northern Europe rarely treat its citizens with the full-on glory of a spectacular rainbow. Yet here in Perth, nature frequently rewards us with ostentatious displays of colour across the horizon.

I’d forgotten how special this minor miracle is and how good it makes me feel.

It got me wondering. We’re surrounded by rainbows. The smell of slow-cooked garlic and rosemary lamb-shanks wafting through the house on a winter’s day. Watching my 11-year-old daughter smile to herself as she reads a book. We spend lots of our lives looking at life through the lens of a half-full glass and yet nature is constantly playing full out in the game and we barely notice.

What rainbows are happening in your life that you are taking for granted?

The dying age

Heath LedgerIs it just me or are you overwhelmed by the numbers of deaths lately? This last two years in particular seem to be a never ending procession of young deaths – and not so young but they are kind of expected.

I’m wondering if it is my age. I’ve hit my 40s. Do I notice it more now?

In the last two years there doesn’t seem to be a month go by without another significant person dying.

Today it was Heath Ledger. Now I didn’t know Heath – yes even though I live in Perth, small as it is, our paths didn’t cross – although my friend’s girls went to the same school as his niece – but I was shocked just the same.

A fortnight ago Clinton Grybas died – sleepwalking apparently. I knew him about – crumbs – must be about 8 years ago or more.

Can it stop now please?
