Emma

I picked up this Jane Austen novel in a second hand booksale. I’d just caught part of Clueless on the telly – you know the movie with Alicia Silverstone – and it seemed like serendipity to then come across the book the story is based on.

So I read it. I last read the book when my orchid hunter was born. I went through a Jane Austen phase and read all of her novels and even a biography when the novels ran out. And of course I caught the movie.

It’s not my favourite JA novel but it is still quite charming. The English class system is thrown sharply into focus as Emma compares the various standings of the people around her as only one near the top of the pile can. The manners are charming too. It is hard to imagine calling someone Mr or Miss these days – unless they are a former teacher perhaps, and would anyone really be scandalised if you were to call someone by their first name?

Hmmm well I do still cringe to remember how I addressed the then Prime Minister of Australia once… “Hi Paul” I (dare I say) gushed… well perhaps not gushed… but I was certainly somewhat casual. Hey I was young and probably overexcited.

So apart from Prime Ministers, and former teachers who probably still scare you a bit, and very old people – who else do you address with social title – why I spoke to the Administrator of Christmas Island just the other day (he’s like the governor) and he told me to call him Neil… can you think of anyone?

Chinese miners

Did you know that 13 people die every day in the Chinese coal mining industry?

I know there are a lot of people in China but even so…

Oh. My. God.

So my boy came down with a sudden flu on Wednesday. He’s been hacking his lungs up. He’s had a high fever barely controlled by Panadol and this morning I hear this on the news:

Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth has experienced an influx of young patients with flu-like symptoms following the deaths of three young children this week. It has been confirmed one of them died from influenza A, and doctors suspect the other two died from the same virus. Two of them were aged two, one was four. They say that they do get deaths from the elderly and already infirm but it’s unusual to get flu deaths from otherwise healthy children.

Now my boy is 12 but he was really lethargic and sicker than I’ve seen him in years.

I rushed into his bedroom this morning just to make sure he was alive (!!) and he is. And he is even feeling better… slightly better… he feels like he’s improving.

Perhaps one of the best remedies so far has been Mum’s essential oils. She came over on Thursday with a potion that we’ve been applying to the tops of his feet, chest and back and also inhaling and he is coming good. Now I just want to find my diffuser and get some more supplies in!

AW Potts

Potts MemorialNumberOneSon, Dad and I went down to Kojonup yesterday for the unveiling and dedication of the AW Potts Memorial at Apex Park.

For the record, Kojonup, when travelling at a relaxed and not break-neck speed is about three hours from Perth on the Albany Highway.

We arrived about 11.30 and had time to wander around Theร‚ Kodja Place, a very impressive local museum and community centre before settling into our fold up chairs to await the unveiling. We were there because Dad is mates with the secretary of the association who created the memorial and who is brother-in-law to the daughter of the said Brig. AW Potts; also Dad and NumberOneSon were at the launch of the memorial this time last year so they wanted to see it unveiled.

It was an impressive turn out. About 1200 people (I reckon) filled the park – there were kids waving flags, veterans, cadets, horses, the community came out in force. The G-G was there – he did the honours and then a commitee member got up and did the most effusive thank you speech I’ve ever heard. We were wondering where it was going at first as he extolled the virtues of our consititution and then the office of the G-G, but I’m sure listening to it he would have felt welcomed! I felt bemused.

We had a chat with Greg James, the sculptor – I was interested to hear that he took a mold of the top of the boulder Potts is standing on so that his feet stood naturally and you couldn’t see the metal spikes holding him to the rock.

Afterwards there was a traditional country afternoon tea back at The Kodja Place and I spent some time wandering around the rose garden. In the garden they have plaques which tell the story of three women. A Nyoongar woman, a farmer’s wife and an Italian farmer’s wife. Brilliant. If you go to Kojonup – take the walk around the garden. Beautifully done.

NumberOneSon got to shake the G-G’s hand and did the typical mumble when asked if he was going to grow up and be a soldier.

Now that would be a useful lesson for kids to do at school. How to answer the small talk of “important” people when they ask you about your future. “No sir, I’m interested in Geography/Botony/Whatever.” It’s such an important social skill.

Speaking of my nearly-a-teenager – I noticed another sign of impending puberty on the way back and have recommended Mitchem. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m such an embarrassing mother!

A human rights bill for Western Australia

WA Attorney General Jim McGinty is expected to announce a plan to introduce a Bill of Rights in WA tomorrow. A panel led by well known human rights advocate and all round good guy Fred Chaney will tour the state in order to gather opinion. It’s an interesting idea.

Apparently we’re the only Western country in the world without one [1]ร‚ or a national human rights act. In Australia, the ACT has had one in place for a few years and Victoria’s comes into effect in 2008.

So are our systems working as they are? Do we need a Commonwealth bill of rights? Plainly we don’t want one that gives us the right to bear arms – just look at how that’s worked or rather not worked in the US, but given we have a gap in longevity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous folk approaching 20 years, I think the answer could be yes.

But would a Bill of Rights lead to a reduction in that gap? And where does it leave our illegal immigrant policy? Does our anti-terrorism legislation need to be put through the filter of a human rights act? [2]ร‚ Our record book has been blotted in recent years. [3]

A bill of rights is consistant with Labor Party Policy and is unlikely to get through the Australian senate as it stands today. However if every state – all controlled by Labor at the moment – passed a human rights bill – wouldn’t that be enough? Would we have to pay more than lip service to disadvantaged groups?

And is the Bill of Rights the way to go anyway? Professor James Allan from the University of Queensland has this to say:

I think the case against bills of rights is a moral case. You either prefer these decisions to be made by your fellow citizens, secretaries, plumbers, than you prefer them to be made by committees of ex-lawyers who used to be commercial lawyers or barristers. And no matter how you dress it up, I think it’s hard to justify handing these decisions over to lawyers. [4]

In my opinion – despite this – I lean toward putting in place a Bill of Rights. I believe having a legislative watchdog over what our parliamentarians will at the very least force them to put human rights on the table, and I’m not confident that it is there at the moment.

Daylight Saving… but I am really looking forward to Daylight Saving ending. This photo is of our backyard at 7am yesterday morning. It’s bloody dark.

The fact is if we are to go down the path of Daylight Savings we need to model it to WA conditions. We need to start earlier – say early October – and finish earlier than the eastern states – say end of February.

Having been an early riser – not through choice – for many years I can tell you that our days start getting longer at the morning end of the day first and then get darker from the morning end of the day first. This would appear to be in contrast with eastern Australia.

From a disaffected Xer

Bernard Salt from his websiteWent to a brilliant talk today by Bernard Salt who is fantastic on all things demographical. You might have seen his column in The Australian (Thursdays). I first saw him present back in 2003 at a conference in Sydney and so when he came to Perth I was keen to get him to speak to staff about our audience.

He did a 20 minute off the cuff presentation which was very interesting. He’s the guy who said women who are 34 in New Zealand today have as much chance of finding a man their own age as an 84-year-old. That’s because with 84-year-olds – most of their male counterparts have died, and in NZ – men leave to go overseas.

He talked about how things have changed… in 1928 for instance you were born, became an adult effectively at 14, retired at 63 and promptly died.

In the 60s the baby boomers invented teenagerhood – 14-21 years – to mark the transition between childhood and adulthood.
Other problems experienced by these women are just looking for buy viagra a reason to delete your email right away and if that happens, it’s game over before it starts.Well, as it turns out, there is one particularly simple and straightforward subject line that WILL get your emails opened every time. People cialis cheap canada of today are becoming smarter and making optimum use of internet for purchasing pharmaceutical products. Yes, I was successful, but only occasionally and viagra 25mg momentarily.
Gen Y have extended that teenagerhood to about 29 years of age! And at the same time the BB have created a second transition period between working full time and retirement… not that baby boomers retire – they just change their lifestyle! And they finally die at age 81 (average).

Bernard reckons that while the BB might whinge about their Gen Y children living at home – they actually love it – it helps them stay young hanging around young hip things… and rather than empty nest syndrome they have crowded house syndrome, Mum Dad, two kids and their girlfriends/boyfriends who stay over…

And what about us – poor old Gen X – we miss out again. AIDS cut short our summer of love and now both Gen Y and the Boomers are chilling out while we are working at our hardest. No wonder we are disaffected. ๐Ÿ™‚
