Stopping to smell the flowers

Not that south west orchids smell – well not that I know of – but it occured to me today that I haven’t seen even one orchid in the wild this year.

In fact at all.

And I love these little treasures of the bush.

It makes me feel good to find them.  Feel good to know that they are there.

Also most of this year I haven’t played bridge (although I have started again in the last fortnight).  And I love playing bridge.

Are these the indicators that tell you your life is out of balance?

Maybe it’s the holiday season or maybe it’s Groover’s change in work.  His change becoming my change?

Or at least forcing me to reassess my life.

What are the indicators in your life?

My indicators are usually physical things, as in upset tummy (stress, poor diet, no exercise), exhaustion (too many late nights) and sore back (too much time at my desk, not enough Pilates). My life feels in balance when I’m taking care of my physical self. It’s amazing how much better I feel in my head when my body is OK.

But the orchids reminded me about my Saturday morning routine – I go to the markets for fresh fruit & veg, and always leave $10 in my pocket for a bunch of flowers on the way out. I hadn’t bought them the last couple of times and I really missed having flowers around the house. They’re a nice thing I do for myself. Yesterday I got fresias and irises :-)

My indicators are stress and tension headaches, both caused by hubby being around 24/7. Truly, the man is ALWAYS here.

I’m not a fan of orchids, not the wild ones nor the hothouse variety. My mum insisted I carry them at my wedding, so I did.

I realised yesterday that I have read nothing but Ngaio Marsh novels for over a year. I’m thinking that is an indicator!

hehe Carol – that makes me think I should be reading a Ngaio Marsh novel…

Was there a reason (tradition?) associated with the orchids River?

I’m with you Trish – flowers in the house make me happy too. :)

i get wonderfully loud burping sessions from some kinds of stress. some indicators for me might be not catching up with beautiful people for lunch or coffee enough!

my indicators are usually my children’s meltdowns and sassiness.
it is then that i realize that we are completely and utterly out of balance.
both within myself and my family…
it usually takes a few days of uninterrupted time together and staring into each other’s eyes to remedy it.
that … and hugs that don’t end before the little lets go. that always seems to make a difference in our balance.

No reason or tradition that I know of. She decided on orchids and told me after she’d ordered them. Just like the rest of the wedding plans she’d made. It really was her day. I didn’t care much as long as I got married.
