It’s not easy being green

Perhaps it was the mention of Kermit the Frog on Spicks and Specks this evening as I was playing with banners or perhaps I’m truly getting in touch with my heart chakra… yeah whatever… as you can see SultanaBlog has changed yet again.

It could have been the delicious lunch R and I had at the newly discovered Grand Palace Restaurant on The Esplanade in that old building opposite the Weld Club. I remember going to the building years ago with an old boyfriend who was a member of a church youth club… The lunch was superb. R started with Crispy Whitebait Soup (an immediate blast of lemon grass was quickly followed up with a delicate whitebait in a crunchy tempura batter and finished with shaved oyster mushrooms and a hint of chilli) while I had the Sung Choi Bao which is that lettucy thing with prawns, chopped up chicken and veges (delicious – the ingredients so fresh). Then we had sizzling lamb with cumin which had hints of Indian cuisine and szechwan chicken – which again was outstanding. We wanted to lick our plates but we are of course too couth for that!

It’s beautifully appointed, the service great, and the prices not too bad. We went to see seeking TRANSCENDENCE at the Art Gallery today. Brilliant. I especially liked Wolfgang Laib’s works although the pollen got up Rs nose. The Marble Milk piece especially tickled me.

Started Salley Vickers “Instances of the Number 3” today and am already hooked. Interesting tale (so far) of a wife and a mistress meeting after the party in common dies in a car crash. With Salley’s novels though, you know there is going to be a twist!

Hot in Underwear

It is so HOT! 34.6 degrees and it’s after 8pm. As Rory’s Counterstrike buddies would say – WTF.

Rory and I are sitting at the computers in our underpants drinking white wine. And that will be as far as it goes people – it’s too damn hot! Sorry Rory.

A Divine Lunch

Today I was MC at the Salley Vickers Literary Lunch, Part of PIAF’s Words and Ideas program. I have to say I approached the event with some trepidation. I haven’t “done” a literary lunch before either as a participant or MC, so I wasn’t sure what was expected. Rosemary at work asked me to do it. Yes I’m supposed to be on leave but they were keen for me to do it and she was very excited by the author although she hadn’t read any of her books.

So I received Mr Golightly’s Holiday and Miss Garnet’s Angel and started to read them – you’ve maybe read my thoughts on earlier blogs. I loved the books and had the luxury of time to absorb them and think about what I might say.

Then this morning Salley rings me and we have a lovely chat about her books and what she likes to talk about and I ran my “first question” past her which she said “hadn’t been asked before” – if you ever need to compliment a journalist say “Noone’s ever asked me that before” – such a buzz… anyway she sounded very nice and I was looking forward – in that butterfly kind of way – to the lunch.

Well it seemed to go off very well. Salley is delightful and such a generous author. She really gave fulsome answers to people’s questions and offered great insight into the way she writes and how her novels came about. My opening comments were well received – what a relief – and I was quite inspired to do more ‘festival’ things.

I am terrible – every year I look at the program and think how fantastic it looks but do I ever go to anything… At least we are doing Mr Cha Cha’s Ballroom! I was talking to one of the festival folk at the lunch and she recommended the Barking Gecko performance of Crabbing at High Tide which I think I’ll take the kids too… and I’ve been intrigued with Zastrossi which looks interesting. Of course the centrepiece seeking TRANSCENDENCE looks amazing and a must see.

Apart from that there is a free writers festival this weekend which has my name on it – in between kiddie commitments and cha cha rehearsals – and I must read Craig Silvey’s Rhubarb – the One Book of the festival.

I have though since returning home on this stupidly hot day started “Instances of the Number 3” – the one Salley Vickers novel I haven’t read – and am already hooked!

Near Death Experience

Yesterday Groover had a near death experience or rather – he nearly died. It happened like this: Our oven has had a noisy fan for ages and it is really tiresome to listen to and because we are now “at home” Groover decided to save the electrician’s fee and fix it.

He started by just taking out a few screws to find out what was making the noise and ended up pulling the entire oven from the wall and onto the floor. The power was on. So he’s spinning the fan going “Right this is the culprit”, when ZAP. Luckily he wasn’t holding onto anything (like me) and had rubber shoes on… anyway I’m thinking it would have been alright anyway because if it had been a “serious” shock the Clipsal safety switch would have tripped.

He went out to turn the power off and that’s when we discovered that the oven is not linked up with the safety switch. Okay I have totally lifted this from GACJEZV but it is so much fun I’m going to have to tell you about it too. I have spent fully ten minutes putting everyone’s name in this thingy and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the baby wizard too…

So… I have the time.

Congratulations to Sonia Neale who does the Bad Mother spots on my old show on the ABC – she has just won herself a book contract with ABC Enterprises – look out for her book come Mother’s Day!

I really must get round to redesigning this blog…

And hey, Happy Valentine’s Day!

Stung

Just in case you were wondering… the Sting concert down at Leeuwin Estate was fantastic.

We drove straight there from Perth and arrived early – about 3.15 – the gates opened at five so we sat in the middle of a dusty windy paddock eating our picnic nibblies and talking. The time past quickly and soon the gates were open and it was a mad rush to the parking area – the coaches – lots of them – racing the cars it seemed. As soon as cars got stopped to be directed to park, people leapt out of the back seats and RAN for the entrance. We sent of Mandi and Mike while we were parked relatively closely to the gate.

We were in the first wave of people entering the amphitheatre and so found ourselves relatively close to the action and the $1000/head seats at the front.

It was lovely sitting their in the sunshine waiting for the concert to start – we caught up with other friends who had also made the trip down – and enjoyed a glass or two of wine and a few more nibblies. The amphitheatre is quite sheltered so the howling wind of the paddock was not in evidence.

The concert was great. Keep the class involved by purchase generic cialis unica-web.com having then identify inappropriate responses and asking them for suggestions on correct responses. It seemed the VIP area was filled with a bunch of miners from Kalgoorlie and I guess balding middle aged men were the go… he wasn’t asked for his pass!

Afterward we stayed on for a while – there were A LOT of very drunk people in the loos – before driving back to Dunsborough. A great midweek interlude.

New model refers to the Archetrek work I’ve been doing. They have simplified their model and I went to a feedback session on Monday night to find out about it. I have to say I am still coming to terms with the changes and that involves some “letting go” but I think after that process the new model will be more flexible and more approachable for new people to get their heads around. We’ll see.

Because we can

We’ve just been down the beach for a swim. Yes it’s a Tuesday. Yes it was the middle of the morning. Yes it was a beautiful day (although the sea breeze had just come in).

I came back from my walk and was hot and sweaty. I lay down on the floor to do a few sit ups (Groover says it’s me having sex with myself which says a lot I think) and I thought – gee the sea looked beautiful as I walked past. Why don’t we go for a swim?

The freedom to be able to be spontaneous is such a gift. And the fun of hanging out with Groover – who is really quite nice when you get to know him – is such a joy.

It felt almost as racy as that day all those years ago when we dared each other to drive down West Coast Highway in the buff. Which we did – thankfully not being picked up for speeding.

Afterwards we went in our bathers to the shops to pick up some sausage meat – after cleaning out our freezer we found seven packets of unused puff pastry – sausage rolls for lunch! And bloody hell why not!

“How come you could afford those Dorito chips Imogen – I only gave you enough money for milk?!”

Oh well that’s alright then.

Phone a friend

Hey guess what?! I was just “phone a friend” on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?. Okay well I wasn’t actually the person who spoke to Eddie Maguire but I was there ready to help!

The story: A good friend of Janet’s who goes by the initials GP was selected to go on WWTBAM today and he asked Janet to get a few layabouts who aren’t working to get together at her place to be one of his PAF choices. So Brad, Janet and I sat around eating lunch nervously waiting for the phone to ring. It rang and we were told that he was in the HOTSEAT! Janet was on phone duty but they wouldn’t let us put the phone on speakerphone so our plan was that she was going to write down the question very quickly with the options and we would write the answer down if we knew it.

The phone rang again. G was on the $32,000 question. We were tense with anticipation. Janet hears the question and starts writing but knows the answer immediately. She sounded great! Yes I’m positive! she says. And then it was all over. But they left the phone on hold so we could hear the rest of the show.

Our friend won quite a bit more than $32,000 but I don’t want to spoil your surprise so you will just have to watch the show – I’ll tell you when I find out what time it is on.

What you want to know if I knew the answer to the question?

Well… no.

But if they had wanted the definition of labile or otiose – I would have been right there!

Congratulations Dippity

Just got back from our first Cott Primary School Assembly – and we were quite impressed. The year 4/5s presented it and two of them read out fairy tales they had written. Then merit certificates were handed out to about 14 of the children including our Dippity “for settling into the new school so well”.

She was very sweet… head down – trying not to show how delighted she was to receive it but not being able to help the odd smile! We are very proud of her. She didn’t want us to go to the assembly but we went anyway – as if we wouldn’t go to see her get her certificate!

Then after some announcements the kids stood up and sang Advance Australia Fair – which Groover was impressed with – my little true blue aussie digger battler new Australian. The kids seem to be settling in well which is a relief.

In other news I have been slugged this week with a repair bill on my car to replace the brake disks – the car is only three years old so I was not happy – I expect better of VW Golfs! And Groover has been cooking up a storm.
