Making room for something new

Taken on the iPhone

2012 wasn’t too bad for me. I had some great opportunities at work and in my personal life discovered rowing – which I love.

But I don’t want to repeat it.

Sure it would be lovely to watch season 3 of Downton Abbey again as if for the first time but hey – maybe there’ll be season 4.

But how do you change your life when you’re so busy with work and family and the hobbies you do have and the obligations you make?

See the thing is I’m not really sure how I want my life to change.

But I know I have to make space in my life for it to happen.

Last year I played less bridge and took up rowing – no regrets there although my bridge is slipping a bit.

I think my family life is pretty much in balance.

And work is going well – bloody hell – 25th anniversary coming up in October!

So really – I don’t want to change much.

Things I have on my activity wish list for 2013 include:

  • Learning how to screenprint
  • Training for masters rowing – maybe going to Turin (maybe not)
  • Getting a team together for the Lord Mayor’s Cup
  • Maybe some ukulele lessons
  • Get my medal for 25 years at the ABC – corny I know but now I’m so close!
  • Do the 3 second video thing everyday!
  • Hang out more on our decking with family and friends.
  • Host more parties (as we only held one this year… not a stretch target)
  • Go down south more often.
  • Visit Ennuin

Gawd – what will I drop to fit all that in?

The drop list:

  • solitaire on my ipad  (better delete now while I’m feeling strong)
  • 50% less TV
  • 30% less bridge
  • less live storytelling?  Not that I did much this year…

Not a very long list…

The other thing you can do is say no to stuff.

I feel I can say no if I’ve tried/done something 3 times.

So this is my last year of doing the bridge club posters for a while.  Just saying.

What will you change in 2013?

New Year’s Eve toga special

So first thing Friday morning I get a text from my friend who has just read her emails more carefully and has realised where we’re going that night for New Year’s Eve…

Okay, I’ve calmed down a bit now… Just looked at The Court website to see we are attending (breathe breathe) a gay and lesbian toga frat party extravaganza??!! Is that correct? Or did I wake up this morning and fall out of bed into a parallel universe where I’m still hot enough to wear a toga among teenagers without looking like a sad old bag lady who just stumbled in off the street!?! Please explain.

We laughed.

Yes that’s where we went and after a Vodka and Red Bull my friend danced her arse off!

On the dancefloor!
I was wearing a dress which had a suggestion of toga about it.

This girl and her (boy) friend really got into it. They were covered with signatures.

The boys were beautiful and the girls were less beautiful.

It was a perfect warm evening and the streets of Northbridge relatively quiet.

Of course that might be because the nightclub is right next door to the police station.

And we weren’t the oldest there.

Happy New Year!

A new year

I can’t say I’m sorry to be saying goodbye to the naughties.

Last year in particular was a bit grim and if I’m honest I’m quite looking forward to putting it behind me.

I’ve started the year off by “doing” the colon cleansing kit Mum gave me for Christmas last year.

Yes, it’s taken me a year to work myself up to it, and I possibly wouldn’t have gone there had I not felt really sick last Tuesday.

So sick I cancelled bridge.

That sick.

You see on this regime you have to cut back your food gradually for three days before embarking on a five day liquid only diet, and I could never seem to cut back!

But because I felt too ill to eat I naturally ate less – it just seemed that I should continue on.

Now it is day three of the liquid diet thing and I find it is not too bad.

I’m not hungry, I am however always thirsty which is odd because I am always drinking water.

On this regime you have five packets of toxin absorber a day mixed with apple juice.

The absorber is a fine clay like powder tasting mainly of dried ginger root. 😛

It bulks up in your stomach to make you feel full.

They also recommend enemas and colonics but I am not going there.

I feel as if I’m not just cleansing my colon but my life, getting rid of the shit and the negativity of last year ready for the new.

2010 is going to be shit free.

Well not literally but you know what I mean.

Tomorrow I go back to work.

This year I’ve given up my carpark and will commute by train.

I’ve made a vegie patch to grow some of our own produce.

In fact perhaps the virgin soil of my garden bed is 2010 waiting for me to plant some seedlings…

(or maybe it’s just a big box of dirt)

I’m planning to join a gym.

And I have my archeological field trip to look forward to at the end of the month.

But right now… excuse me.

The water closet calls.

A Lady Di moment

One of the most famous images of Lady Di – before she married Chuck – was the picture of her outside the daycare centre with the see-through skirt. Remember that?

Well I discovered that when I walk in sunlight the same thing happens to my dress.

Yes that dress in the photo.

I made it over the Christmas break and mostly I’m quite happy with it, you know apart from the see-through bit.

So I’ve decided to line the skirt with black fabric and also lengthen it by about two inches so it sits on the knee because for me… it’s also a tad too short.

Sorry Ken, told you you might be in for a disappointment. 🙂

Ahhhh the end of 2008.  I go into the new year sitting by a backyard pool, eating and drinking with friends, followed by Guitar Hero World Tour.

Rock on 2009!

New Year Resolutions

newyearIt’s still January so a review of my New Year’s Resolutions seems to be in order (last year I did this in March).

So without further ado – the audit:

1. Return emails efficiently

I reckon I’m pretty good at returning emails. Mostly. Except when I’m on holidays. Today at work I had to go through over a 1000. I deleted anything sent to me more than a week ago. I figure if it’s really important someone will tell me. It’s not as if they wouldn’t have got an email saying I was on hols. I’m prepared for this to bite me on the bum.

2. Play bridge once a week

Well I tried. I still need to find a regular partner though.

3. Love my children

Well they are pretty lovable – this isn’t hard unless they are being very trying!

4. Love my husband

See 3.

5. Love my job

I haven’t been good at this. This year I’m changing my attitude. Life’s too short eh?

6. Be better at keeping in contact with friends

This is hard to measure. And I’ve made a heap new friends via this blog. I think I’ve been slightly better… 🙂

Finally one I can say I did live up to!

8. Say yes

No.

9. Save

Very rubbish at this one.

10. Explore new opportunities

Haven’t really done this either. 🙁

But lets not dwell on the past! This year I resolve to:

1. Begin each work day affirming why I love what I do. I figure that all jobs have bits you hate but I mostly like my job so why not start from a happy place.
2. Review every book I read.
3. Keep my mobile phone charged.
4. Buy a laptop.
5. Put money aside for savings every paycheck.
6. Find a regular bridge partner.

I know I should have some fitness/diet things in there but hey, I figured I’d set myself some realistic goals!
