My first time in Bali, told live without notes

So The Bird was a revelation.

What a great venue.

Small, intimate – yet with quite a lot of seating.

Cute bar.

Great acoustics.

(a little warm – but hey it’s winter soon… please tell me winter is happening this year)

It was the first night of Barefaced since the Blue Room season ended and we were all pretty hyped up.

Would anyone come?

What would the venue be like?

Would our stories be any good?

Can I remember my story??

No notes remember.

And how would the “out of the hat” idea work?

Well it was a great success IMHO.

First, the venue was packed, and thanks to those of you who came along to support me, and the other story tellers of course.

The venue was great.

Our stories were good – and I remembered (most of) mine.

And the out of the hat idea where two wildcard storytellers were drawn out on the night to tell their stories worked too.

Highlights – Shirley’s reaction when she wins the blue ribbon, Andrea’s Chooky Fowler (OMG hilarious!), Alison telling how she wagged school and was sent to hospital was classic and George’s trekking tale brought back some memories – I related!

The next session is last Tuesday of April – which is the day after Easter – and the theme is Heroes and Villains.

If you want to have a go – go to the website – and come along to our workshopping sessions – the more the merrier!

You can hear my first story here.

What am I saying?

Get excited!

This is stage two of the story-telling project I’m involved in.

You remember part 1 don’t you?

Barefaced Stories.

Part 1 was me doing the course and then telling my nude beach story at the Blue Room in February.

There is a lot more detail in the story that was told on the night and you can listen to that below.

Well that gives you a good idea of what we are doing – true stories told in front of an audience without any notes.

Tonight I’m telling a story about my first time in Bali.

It’s a gentler story.

Not quite as racy but I hope will be entertaining.

After my first experience I’ve been dying to have another go.

It was so exhilarating!

New Year’s Eve toga special

So first thing Friday morning I get a text from my friend who has just read her emails more carefully and has realised where we’re going that night for New Year’s Eve…

Okay, I’ve calmed down a bit now… Just looked at The Court website to see we are attending (breathe breathe) a gay and lesbian toga frat party extravaganza??!! Is that correct? Or did I wake up this morning and fall out of bed into a parallel universe where I’m still hot enough to wear a toga among teenagers without looking like a sad old bag lady who just stumbled in off the street!?! Please explain.

We laughed.

Yes that’s where we went and after a Vodka and Red Bull my friend danced her arse off!

On the dancefloor!
I was wearing a dress which had a suggestion of toga about it.

This girl and her (boy) friend really got into it. They were covered with signatures.

The boys were beautiful and the girls were less beautiful.

It was a perfect warm evening and the streets of Northbridge relatively quiet.

Of course that might be because the nightclub is right next door to the police station.

And we weren’t the oldest there.

Happy New Year!

Is it worth queuing for Yum Cha?

Yep. I think so.

Yum Cha in Northbridge

I don’t like queuing for food – hell – I don’t even know how to spell it – here’s hoping that’s correct – so when we got to the Northbridge Chinese restaurant on Sunday an hour after opening I was somewhat dismayed to have to get an orange coloured raffle ticket – number 23 – and wait – our clothes steaming in the packed entryway.

Of course I’d rather take my chances and wait at a packed out restaurant than sit down immediately at the half empty one next door…

And the waiting turned out to be good.

First of all it gave us a chance to check out all the food so we knew what we’d go for. Secondly we built up an appetite.

I wanted the veges… to balance all the yummy deep fried stuff… and they were delicious.

Boy do the waiters move fast in Yum Cha. What a business model! Bang bang bang – food immediately at your table – before you know it you’ve said yes to three prawn dishes and two pork and something you’re not even sure what it is – or was before it was deep fried in yumminess.

And the tea. I love Chinese tea and Groover had picked up a great tip from Kylie Quong’s TV show. If you want the waiter to refresh your pot – just take the lid off it. Forget trying to catch their eye – you’ve got no chance at the speed they move.

And suddenly you’re on the street – stuffed to within an inch of your life – wondering what the hell just happened and busting for the loo.
