My Salad Days

Isn’t that how you’re supposed to describe your youth? Last night I went back to Uni to catch up with the Class of 88. It was a great reunion. Casual, relaxed, friendly.  A great number came over from the Eastern States and up from the country and it was lovely to see what toll the years had taken.

Overall I thought we scrubbed up quite well.

It was weird to see all those boys who, apart from one or two, were all single while we were at Uni, so staid and married.  Talking fondly about small human units.  It was sweet… just unexpected.  Although I don’t know why I didn’t expect it.

It didn’t stop us kicking on into the wee small hours which I thought was a pretty good effort – especially since I had woken at 5.30am to get down to the (non) start of the the Cottesloe to Rottnest Swim.  Even though the conditions were grim there was still a huge contingent at the beach, standing around in the semi dark like some huge festival event.

While many frustrated competitors may have been angry and disappointed (read the forums on the Rotto Swim Website), it really was the only decision the organisers could take. And it must be said that there were one or two smiling with relief.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The Poshi and I went to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream tonight.  I had chosen to go because I wanted to see the most “out there” thing on the Festival Program and I figured Shakespeare in Korean would be about it.

I was prepared for high, difficult art.  I was steeling myself to sit through it and roll with it and “enjoy” the experience.

I loved it all. We were so uplifted by the experience it felt as if we were walking on air.

If you go and see only one thing at the festival THIS IS THE ONE TO SEE!  I’m thinking of going back for seconds and taking the kids.

And I’ve just found out – it was the hit of the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe Festival – and they didn’t even have the luxury of surtitles!

Walking with Dinosaurs

Last night we went to see Walking with Dinosaurs – The live experience. I was quite impressed. They were very cleverly made and manipulated – not once did we see a collision – and the set was well done as well. The plants were air filled so that they “grew” around the stage – it was lovely to watch.

The narrator/paleontologist was great and led us through the different ages. At this point I became very impressed with the depth of knowledge of number one son who helped me out with extra bits of knowledge along the way.

For me the most impressive were the ornithosaurus – a huge flying dinosaur which was “flown” in front of a moving landscape which made you think it was indeed flying (best view of that was front on)… and the T Rex – which made me jump!

To give the impression of great weight the foley effects were expertly used. Every time a giant foot came down the auditorium reverberated with sound.

We went to see the Tiger Lillies on Monday night at The Verandah.

Eric Clapton from the Where's Eric websiteI was lucky enough to be invited to the Eric Clapton concert tonight. The tickets were amazing – second row, centre.

Eric Clapton does not look like a rock star. This was a concert for people who love great music not teenyboppers looking for eye candy.. He’s what 60? He looks like an old man. He wears very unfashionable glasses. But he can play the guitar like an angel.

He had some serious guitar players with him on-stage. Derek Trucks – who was awesome – and incidentally the youngest player to make the Rolling Stone top 100 guitarists of all time… (can you name the two women in the top 100?) and a guy called Doyle Bramhall II (who was taking photos on-stage using the timing device on his SLR!). The drummer Steve Jordan was great too – very… enthusiastic. Eric knows how to pick a band…even the pianist is world renowned… apparently.

There was a mix of old and new – he used the full band and did solo acoustic pieces – it was a well crafted concert.
