Kalgoorlie Dreaming

As my twitter readers know I’ve recently been to Kalgoorlie-Boulder.  I love Kal.  The air is clear and dry.  The dirt is red.  The people are friendly and wow… the buildings are fantastic.

The superpit – an ENORMOUS open cut mine – is literally on the edge of town.  You can see it best maybe on this Google Map.  290m deep, 3km long and 1.5 km’s wide… it’s big.

  1. I remember stopping over briefly on a bus trip from Perth to Melbourne. The streets were very wide, right?

And Skylab! Didn’t Skylab come down there?

Fantastic pics, I am blown away by the scale of the operation.

  2. I do love haul trucks. A hangover from my mining days. So big, so dangerous. One once tumbled down a face up north and the driver survived all cosy in that cockpit. Well not cosy, but survived.

And Kal is a stunning town (in the centre).

  3. Those buildings certainly are gorgeous. And so clean. It’s amazing to think they’re so close to the mine and not covered in mining dust. I have a photo of the gigantic LNG tank construction that my brother is currently working on at Karratha. It totally dwarfs the tiny cars pictured at the bottom of it.
