I don’t know whether to be happy or sad about the State Government rejecting the idea of moving Grade 7 to highschool.

On the one hand I think Grade 7 is a waste of time – the kids are plainly ready to move on and tend to muck around in the less intense atmosphere the top of the school allows.  On the other hand, do I really want to spend the extra wongah paying for an extra year of highschool?  Private is [chokes] expensive, and even Public is more expensive than primary school.

Of course many private schools are starting their middle school curriculum at the start of Grade 7 already – which seems a bit of a money grab and entices kids out of the public primary schools early – especially around here. And now we have all the Catholic schools following suit.  As my girl falls into the year which is half a year due to the change in intake age – the numbers in her class are already very low.  One or two girls leave and the whole class could go.  In which case we’d have no choice.  And don’t eastern states’ highschools start at Grade 7?

Potts MemorialNumberOneSon, Dad and I went down to Kojonup yesterday for the unveiling and dedication of the AW Potts Memorial at Apex Park.

For the record, Kojonup, when travelling at a relaxed and not break-neck speed is about three hours from Perth on the Albany Highway.

We arrived about 11.30 and had time to wander around The Kodja Place, a very impressive local museum and community centre before settling into our fold up chairs to await the unveiling. We were there because Dad is mates with the secretary of the association who created the memorial and who is brother-in-law to the daughter of the said Brig. AW Potts; also Dad and NumberOneSon were at the launch of the memorial this time last year so they wanted to see it unveiled.

It was an impressive turn out. About 1200 people (I reckon) filled the park – there were kids waving flags, veterans, cadets, horses, the community came out in force. The G-G was there – he did the honours and then a commitee member got up and did the most effusive thank you speech I’ve ever heard. We were wondering where it was going at first as he extolled the virtues of our consititution and then the office of the G-G, but I’m sure listening to it he would have felt welcomed! I felt bemused.

Afterwards there was a traditional country afternoon tea back at The Kodja Place and I spent some time wandering around the rose garden. Speaking of my nearly-a-teenager – I noticed another sign of impending puberty on the way back and have recommended Mitchem. 🙂 I’m such an embarrassing mother!
