I went to dinner at Unraveled last night.

Took some doing.

Mainly because in my head I thought I was trying to book “Entangled”.

Which isn’t a bad name for a pasta restaurant I thought.

Anyhow I couldn’t find a reference to my imagined destination online but I could find the number to the restaurant it used to be – The Twisted Fork – so I rang that number and we were in!

I think they call them selves Unraveled because that is how they present their menu.

You choose the pasta, the protein and the sauce separately.

So many of the sauces sounded delicious.

I tried the mushroom sauce with chicken and saffron linguine – which was a special kind of divine.

And the spinich and ricotta ravioli with pumpkin, preserved lemon and sage was also delicious.

The bread and butter pudding with white chocolate and raspberry – diet starts today!

The service – friendly and prompt.

Tasting Pink Zulu

A couple of new restaurant/wine bars have opened near us and today we popped into one of them, Pink Zulu, to check it out.

I don’t usually do restaurant reviews on this blog but Friday night we went to Pata Negra, the new Tapas bar open on Stirling Highway… opposite my fave Vietnamese restaurant TQR.

It was fantastic.

The food was ALL good.

Of course I am rubbish when it comes to Tapas.

There are simply too many choices… hey I have trouble enough trying to decide between still and sparkling water.

He is GREAT at ordering Tapas. Who knew?

We had some amazing Iberico ham – melt in the mouth – and you have to have it, after all the restaurant is named after it.

We had olives, mushrooms, asparagus with walnuts, mountain bread and Tsziki dip, eggplant fritters and to finish pork belly.

If I go back I’ll be ordering the eggplant fritters and probably the asparagus and definitely the pork belly.

OMG it was sublime.

Well the fellow who runs this place got it right I reckon.

He has a restaurant in Albany which he opens when he feels like it.

I hate it when people smoke around me – I hate it.

We’d got there late.

The pub was full to overflowing and the only table free was one in the corner next to a large table of mums and babies.

Personally I’d rather sit near the lactation crowd than a bunch of yobbos or even parents with active 4 year olds, so I was pleased when they pulled their stroller closer to them, unblocking the path to the table, and we sat down.

We gazed fondly over at the crowd as we relived those fast dimming memories, and I also reflected on playgroup lunches… the sort you have when you become a member of the Bub Club.

This is another Kate Lamont restaurant to go with the East Perth posh dining and the more rustic fare in the Swan Valley.

The business model is a wine bar, serving little plates of yumminess – none of which I photographed (sorry TFP).

It is not a cheap night out.

I’ve been there a few times now and enjoyed the atmosphere – which is buzzing. I’ve never been there when it’s quiet. The wine is always good. The tea organic. The service exceptional. But the food…

You know, it is beautifully prepared but I just find it a bit meh.

Last night we had the scallops… or should I say scallop. You only get one scallop per serve and even for a small plate of yumminess that’s a bit rich I think. The slice I had was delicious.

The venison chorizo was also tasty – I’d recommend that if you go.

The truffle fritters were deep fried and that saves many a dish – I found the centre tasteless myself.

The roulade was generous (for Lamonts) and quite tasty – loved the pistachios.

It was like reading a book from an award winning author. All the ingredients are there, you know the author is celebrated, but… you just can’t get into it. You feel you should… but you’re left wanting another book.

Hey the company was great though!

I don’t like queuing for food – hell – I don’t even know how to spell it – here’s hoping that’s correct – so when we got to the Northbridge Chinese restaurant on Sunday an hour after opening I was somewhat dismayed to have to get an orange coloured raffle ticket – number 23 – and wait – our clothes steaming in the packed entryway.

Of course I’d rather take my chances and wait at a packed out restaurant than sit down immediately at the half empty one next door…

And the waiting turned out to be good.

First of all it gave us a chance to check out all the food so we knew what we’d go for. Secondly we built up an appetite.

I wanted the veges… to balance all the yummy deep fried stuff… and they were delicious.
