Dora – Day 1

So today Rory and I set off (finally) on our trip across Australia in my parent’s Explorer.

Yes it’s Dora the Explorer or in Explorer Motorhome Owner’s parlance #321TV Quedjinup. I know.

Rory and I in the driveway

We were supposed to leave a few days ago but Rory’s car had to go in for a service and Hugo was nearly back from Cairns so we waited.

It turned out to be a good thing really because after collecting Dora on the Wednesday we could potter about transferring our lives piece by piece into the artfully squirrel like storage units.

Of course that doesn’t mean we didn’t forget things.

Like a mug.

Or garlic.

Just putting in the family shot as well although we are leaving the littlies to housesit.

We decided to make the station our first stop.

It’s about 5 and a half hours due east and gets us to a comfortable spot, off the bitumen for our first night. Yes I’m typing this on my laptop in front of a pot belly stove with a great wifi setup. Rory is watching the Eagles.

Tomorrow night we will be truly on our own.

Dora is a very comfortable ride.

Rottnest Island.

A story from my first trip to Bali

Cocktails at the swim up bar - deluxe

Ah back in the day when I thought flouro pink was an acceptable colour to wear on your head (in the early 1990s) Groover and I went to Bali.

We went white water rafting in Ubud and banana boating off Nusa Dua.

Yes that was a fun trip.

We bought fringed leather jackets that we never wore.

We bargained for copy watches that we didn’t want to see who was the better haggler (I was).

Groover dived into the swimming pool, banged his head and had a huge egg on his head for days.

It was my first ever overseas holiday with a boy.

A high class problem

Breakfast at Scene
The last two mornings we’ve had a picnic breakfast delivered to our villa.

The butlers come with the baskets and set up the table in the gazebo with fresh fruit, plunger coffee, bakery items, cheese and cold cuts.

But here’s the thing.

Eggs taste best eaten within seconds from being taken off the stove.

And plunger coffee?

Shudder.

So despite the convenience and luxeness of having our breakfast delivered, this morning we wandered up to the restaurant.

Espresso coffee.

But ahhh, it is worth it.

For the coffee alone – worth it.

Delightful.

Escape to Dunsborough

I’m in Dunsborough. Limited internet access but I confess even more limited enthusiasm for blogging, for anything technical really.

I’ve been reading, staring at the view, popping down to the beach for a dip, eating and doing sudoku… a lot of sudoku.

I’m here with Dippity, and I’ve discovered the way to Dippity’s contentment is finding her a good book, or at least, a book she’s prepared to read.

I found Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield in the bookcase.  A copy from my childhood.  It was a lovely story when it was written in 1936 and still is.

Dipp devoured it in a couple of hours.

She is now reading City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, it will make do she says until we get back to Perth and she can read her brother’s copy of Eldest.

We’re staying with my Dad and had invited some other friends to join us for a few days.   On one of those days we went on a trail ride through the national park.  On horseback.

I thought I’d escaped lightly the next day but three days later the strain on my thighs is evident.

I wonder how the horse is bearing up.

I’m also using this time away from my coffee machine to prepare myself for The Colon Cleansing Kit I received for Christmas.

It’s my third day without coffee (although I’m getting some caffeine from black tea).  The headaches have passed and I’m ready to transfer to green tea – or I will be when I get back.

Last night we went to a new Indian restaurant in Dunsborough.  It seems an odd cuisine for the South West – I don’t know why but I tend to think of fusion-cafe style food as more the go here.

The Indigo Pearl however is excellent and worth a try if you’re staying down south.   I recommend the India Plate for starters.   It’s in the old Bay Cottage Restaurant if you know Dunsborough at all and has been in operation since August.

Right.  Dad’s in his bathers and my little window of blogging opportunity is closing.  It’s time for a dip down at Little Meelup.

Tomorrow we’re visiting my cousin’s farm to witness preg-testing the cattle on our way back home where normal service to this occasional missive will no doubt be restored.

See ya.

Atlantic City to Virginia Beach

Well here we are in freezing Virginia. OMG it is SO COLD! Temperatures in the 20s which means minus 4-5 in real money.

Last night we stayed at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. AC is like Las Vegas lite and the hotels attached to the casinos are cheap. 5 stars for about $59 plus tax. The kids loved getting room service – which cost more than the room – and we loved finding a bar which sold Chimay. In the morning we wanted to walk along the boardwalk but… did I mention how cold it is?
Atlantic City
It means puffy jackets and not a lot of walking along the streets and beaches taking in the sights.

Margate

This is more like guerilla strike tourism. We find somewhere – like Margate’s Lucy the Elephant – a giant tin and wood pachyderm by the seaside – drive as close as we can – leap out – take a photo – leap back in the car and turn up the heating.

The deceptive thing is it looks from inside our heated SUV like a hot summer’s day outside. The sky is clear and blue. The pavement is dry. If it wasn’t for the fact that the streets are completely deserted you would think it was hot outside. The Wildwoods further down the New Jersey coast looked like a retro 1960s ghost-town.

Jetsons style neon signs for motels called “The Crusader”, “The Lollipop” and “The Mango” line the streets and you expect tumbleweeds to roll past. We were playing spot the person.

We caught the ferry from Cape May over to Lewes. Cape May is a charming Victorian seaside resort with rows of weatherboard houses painted very elaborately. It would be a charming place to visit. In the summer. Every second house is a B&B and they do look lovely.

By the time we got across the water and into Delaware it was dark so we hit the freeways and headed south. Groover had The Taphouse in his sights and, after fighting with the Neverlost Nazi we eventually made it down the peninsula across the Chesapeake Bay bridge and tunnel spectacular. I took a little video with my new Flip. It really is very impressive. Probably more impressive in the daytime.

After booking into a hotel with a computer – oh yeah and beds and stuff – we drove out to the Taphouse so Groover could sample the beers and we could have some dinner. It was really good. Well worth seeking it out.

Thanks to Lonely Planet for that one – trust Aussies to highlight the great beer houses!

Tomorrow we are starting our day with Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers first flew their airplane. Then south south south!

A little bit of housekeeping

You might have noticed Hugamuga’s comment in the sidebar. That’s my son. Also known as The Orchid Hunter. However I’ve decided to adhere to his online preference and call him by his online handle.

Hugamuga came from a friend of his in primary school – I’m not sure if this friend had looked up the meaning but in fact he was spot on, for Huggermugger means random and disorderly and that, my dear friend, sums up my darling boy. 🙂
