Raspberry patch

I’ve planted a raspberry bush.

I love raspberries but at $10 a punnet who can afford to eat them!

We buy the frozen ones sometimes as a special treat and the kids make short work of them.

The best raspberries I’ve ever tasted were at a berry farm on the east coast of Tasmania.

Oh rapture!

I bought the plant at the Mt Claremont Farmers Market last weekend.

My gardening advisor said lots of organic matter and a handful of some fast release fertiliser in the bottom of the hole.

Does this look like a happy raspberry plant?

Apparently raspberries send out runners and I could end up with a raspberry corner.

Bring it on!

Of course my pommy husband Groover was skeptical.

“I grew up with raspberries” sniffs he, “and they will never survive in Perth!”

Yeah whatever.

We’ll see who is right in a few months and whether four years studying agricultural science actually counts for anything.

The see-through wall

Our brick wall

We have a little problem with our walls. They are… thinning a bit.

I’m wondering if all we need is a bit of render…

What do you reckon?

Okay clearly maybe more than a bit.

Our walls were exposed recently when I asked my dad round to help me prune back a grevillia which had grown a little large and was blocking access to our side gate.

I’ll bring my chainsaw said Engineer of the Year, and he did, along with the mulcher.

I love the mulcher. I love the way you feed in a branch and it sucks it in and spits it out in tiny bits… And then you have mulch. It’s just all good.

So of course I got a little carried away – a chainsaw, a mulcher, a parent. The perfect formula for adiosing three trees and a few branches… and the grevillia.

One of the branches came from the bottlebrush tree and smelled like essential oil when it was munched up.

It was a fine afternoon’s work but now the wall is exposed… and seemingly our front garden as well.

Sigh.

UPDATE: In the transfer of hosts of this site some of your comments (and jokes) got lost. So here they are…

They are first class “dad” jokes Anita!

River you’re right and I would bother for one brick. Sadly we have a great many “windows”. I’ll post a photo soon so you can see what I mean.

Jen – thanks 🙂

Joh – yes – but he was under direction. 🙂 I love a man with a chainsaw.

PQ – me too. I wants one.

Dad jokes for sure!

Just thinking… in Italy you see little holes in walls like this all the time, with metal garnishments to give you sneak peeks into secret worlds… perhaps you could modify this hole somehow to make it look “on purpose”?

😉

To which I replied:
Anita – what I like about you is your positivity!

You’re definitely glass half full!

My soul is a furnace of love;stoke it to the full

Title courtesy of the Bacio chocolate found on my pillow at the lodge we stayed at last weekend. A charming weekend with good friends and good wine. There are photos to prove it. 🙂

During the weekend, after a very wine soaked evening we went on a wine tour of the region. In a bus. With about 10 twenty-somethings. Sigh. I am getting old. Also was very hungover so it was lucky that the last stop had some jewellery for sale!

The lodge itself was deluxe. Lovely food, well appointed rooms, completely up to spec!

While we were away the coroner finally delivered his findings on Harry’s death. No surprises to those who went to the inquest. Mr Hope was scathing about CASA and it would seem rightly so. I’m just happy it’s over at last. Although it will never be over, not really.

Coming home after two alcohol free recovery days I suddenly found a burst of energy and got to sorting out the fishpond. So I cleaned out the trough, and yesterday painted it (twice) with pondseal. Now I just need to await a week before filling it. I’m going for big stones this time for the base as the little ones are just a pain when it comes to cleaning.

I also divided up the hugely overgrown irises and now have several (tens) of little ones that will hopefully survive their rough treatment. My plan is to create a bog garden next to the fish pond and plant some of them out. Others will go to new homes. Projects for the summer.

Today I was doing such hard weights at the gym that my watch dug into my wrist veins and they are all lumpy red and bruised. Beauty is pain my friends, beauty is pain. Or at least fitness is. I am starting to feel fit and hopefully will one day be so.

I went to McDonalds tonight with the kids for a quick tea. Honestly why would you eat there? Despite the Salads Plus and Deli Choices I must say I was not inspired (although I saw an enormous young mum of about 20 order a salad). The whole place stank of stale oil. I had an orange juice.

Dippity and I wrote a Haiku tonight about surfing.

I’ve got the hiccoughs
Maybe I’m scared of the surf

Photos soon… and happy birthday MIL!
