Cyclone days and summer nights

My cyclone track map pin-up board

So this is what my life at work is like at the moment…

Fire fire flood fire fire fire fire fire cyclone fire.

So far we haven’t had many cyclones – ah but it is early in the season my friend.

This next one they are calling a “midget” cyclone.

At the start of the season I clear my pin-up board in readiness.

This year they are predicting about 6-7 cyclones to hit the north west and my role is to coordinate our emergency warnings.

So I need a bit of space.

Then as the cyclones develop I print out the track maps and pin them up.

I love track maps.

Don’t they look cool?

Okay… maybe you have to be there.

The other thing I like to know in advance is what the bureau are going to name the cyclone.

Usually I get a call from the severe weather centre – when I hear Andrew Burton’s voice my heart sinks.

Not that he’s not a nice guy but him calling me means a cyclone and a cyclone means long hours and rostering people on public holidays.

Still – I no complain.

Imagine being in Queensland at the moment.  Find out how you can help here.

Or Carnarvon.

Let’s hope the midget cyclone does the right thing and buggers off out to sea.

And the arsonists stay at home over the long weekend.

Oh.  And happy new year!

UPDATE: The cyclone turned into a fizzer… not sure if they will even name it.

Fire Tweets

kinglakeI’m new to Twitter and so if this sounds a little evangelical, a little newly converted, my apologies.

I’ve been following the fires in Victoria via my twitter feed, getting updates from 774melbourne and CFA.

And I really feel connected. As much from the official tweets as the more informal ones from other twitterers in the area.

I’ve also tuned into 774’s emergency coverage on the stream.

The news is grim. Many lives lost, hundreds of houses, towns have disappeared.

Hot

Hot wet

It’s been a stinking hot weekend in Perth. Temps around 40 degrees C every day, oh and please throw in some humidity just to make it more fun…

The fun started 10.30pm Friday evening when I get a call from FESA that we had four fires in and around the metro area and could I get some alerts on the radio… Two barges on the Swan, some idiots on Rotto letting of flares, a scrub fire that took out a shopping centre in Halls Head and a forest fire near Dwellingup.

Saturday was spent ferrying NumberOneSo to cricket, parties and getting school books – all the time coordinating getting alerts read and scrambling teams – I used up all my phone credit and battery! In between I decided to do a little spot painting round the house (as you do when it’s too bloody hot to go outside) and spilt about 4 litres of housepaint over my jewellery box, brand new shorts and some of Groover’s clothes too. He wasn’t best pleased but was gracious about it.
