Photo essay from Esperance

The colour and clarity of the Southern Ocean is to die for.

I love Esperance.

The water is so beautiful, the beaches so white, the rocky outcrops so… rocky.

If only the sharks weren’t so big, the water temperature so low, the wind so… windy.

Of course being a bit of a space geek I also love that Skylab fell on Esperance.

Seen on the side of the Skylab museum

I’ve been meaning to go to the Skylab exhibit each time I visit… maybe next time.

The museum is open from 1.30 to 4.30.

I wonder about this advertising campaign though.

Are they promoting the fact they have very officious rangers?

Not much litter around though so perhaps Keep Australia Beautiful should think about a similar campaign:

“Don’t litter or we’ll sic the Esperance rangers on you!”

It's a windy place old Esperance, so I imagine this was used well

Yep it’s a wind radar.

Not really much more to say.

An amuse bouche on the menu at the Tearooms

This did amuse me as I ordered my bacon and scrambled eggs and long black coffee.

Oh which reminds me of the coffee I had in Mandurah on the weekend – I asked for a long black and clearly confused the waitress who served my black coffee in a tall clear glass. LOL

The view across the bay from the Tearooms.

It was 37 degrees in Perth this day and about 25 in Esperance.  Mild and overcast.

The pine trees were planted as a navigational aid – you can kind of see why here.

Ahhh Esperance.

I hope to come back soon and next time maybe go to see what’s left of Skylab.

The bus nazi

On Wednesday I caught the bus from Esperance to Kalgoorlie… it was quite the experience.

It’s pretty cheap – only $52 for a five hour ride through the flat brown land into the desert.

The bus was about five minutes late and when the driver pulled up he jumped out, flung open the luggage compartment and started shouting.

“You!  Are you going to Kalgoorlie?  Put your luggage in here now!”

Yes the soup nazi’s cousin was in charge of the bus.

“Make sure you sit in the seat you’ve been allocated!”

“Noone is allowed to sit in the back seat… you hear that kids.”

“Don’t put your feet on the seats!”

My allocated seat was right at the front of the bus and as we drove out of Esperance I overheard him talking to the office in Kalgoorlie.

Apparently he’d picked up the bus to find the television broken and that the back seats had been urinated on.

Ewwww.

No wonder he was a little grumpy, I actually started feeling a bit sorry for him.

After all he was trying to do his best.

I spent a lot of the first part of the journey on the phone – hey – I was working and when we got to the first stop he turned to me and said:  “Are you going to be on that phone the whole way?  Well move back then.”

I moved back.

He was a short man with a loud voice, I wasn’t going to argue.

The bus was pretty empty and there was lots of choice.

When we got to Norseman I got myself a coffee and shared a picnic table with a truckie called Jeff.

He was heading up to visit a prospector mate in Kalgoorlie.

We had a nice chat but soon the bus nazi was agitating for us all to get back on the bus.

I threw the rest of my coffee out and clambered back on.

All in all the journey was quite good.

The seats comfortable (even if some of them urine soaked) and with spare seats abounding, plenty of room to spread out.

The movies were woeful.

Still if you’ve got a good book and a phone – no problem.

And if talking on the phone irritates the driver at least it doesn’t interfere with the navigation systems.

Weekend in Esperance

esperance 044

I’m in Esperance.

Esperance is on the south coast of Western Australia – south of Kalgoorlie.

It is a long way from anyone and not really on the way to anywhere.

But.

It. Is. Beautiful.

People who visit Esperance will tell you how stunning and unspoilt the beaches are.

You’ll hear about Twilight and Salmon beaches and maybe you’ll even hear about Lucky and Hellfire.

They will tell of snow white sand, so fine it feels like cornflour between your toes.

They will tell you of turquoise waters as clear as glass.

Of granite rocks that slope into the sea.

But they will not be able to do justice to the natural beauty of the Bay of Isles.

It is simply magnificent.

And the best bit?

The beaches are deserted.

I’m lucky.

Esperance

Work brings me to Esperance and I have managed to work in a bridge congress over the weekend.

When I got here on Friday I must admit to questioning why I came to the congress.

What was I doing in a room full of strangers – all except two more than ten years older than me??

But once we started playing cards and partying at night I soon got into the swing of it.

We all stayed in the one house – well 13 of us did – and we had a great weekend.

More alcohol than was strictly good for us, great food, convivial company and then early morning walks to bring some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted back for breakfast.

One morning I even spied the resident seal, under the jetty.

Did I play well?

Did I win any money?

No.

I had fun though I missed Groover’s debut at Theatresports – apparently he rocked!

After the congress finished I caught up with my work colleague who has kindly put me up and we drove out to Cape Le Grand National Park.

Hellfire Beach, Esperance

OMG the beaches!

The sand is so fine and compacted it is like concrete.

In some places where it is softer – it flies around your feet like talcum powder.

The water is oh so cold but as clear as clear can be.

It was windy.

Hellfire Beach, Esperance

My colleague drives a little Daiwoo which she says “runs on the smell of an oily rag”, which I thought was lucky as there we were 70k from Esperance with the fuel tank on empty.

A light will go on when you are really running out won’t it?

Oh yes she says but don’t worry…

So on the way to dinner tonight we run out of fuel and you would have seen me with three or four hefty gals and guys of Esperance pushing said Daiwoo up the hill to the petrol station.

LOL – an interesting end to a long weekend.

I’m in Esperance one more day so tomorrow we’re going to check out the famous Loose Goose restaurant, then Wednesday I’m on a bus to Kalgoorlie!
