Kickstart the holiday

What’s the best way to say – mate.  I’m on holidays.

For me, it’s taking off immediately for Dunsborough.  Even if it is only for a couple of nights.

We are lucky in that Mum and Dad have built down there so spur of the moment getaways are possible and yet this is the first time we’ve been down all year.

Mind you. This is my first holiday this year.

While down there I caught up with my sister’s blog.

So as you know Vladimir Putin is Russia’s Prime Minister.

Sadly my daughter didn’t and when she saw the name Vladimir she immediately thought “head vampire”.

As you would, given her classic education which included the Twilight series.

And you know… she’s 12.

We were playing the Name Game – have you played it?

It’s a classic parlour game.

First everyone writes down about ten names on slips of paper and puts them in the middle – you want 60-80 names.

We were down in Dunsborough for mum’s 70th birthday celebration.

She had invited her family to Caves House for a breakfast.

The photos in the room were of Caves House in the year of her birth – 1939.

Two brothers married two sisters and mum and her cousin are both the third children of their respective pairings.

They used to play together.

They both have sons who are artists.

When we go down south our favourite beach to swim at is a beach we’ve always called Little Meelup.

As long as I’ve known it, I’ve never known it by any other name.

I think it’s what Mum called it growing up – she grew up in Vasse – and so naturally we’ve followed suit.

In fact, I thought everyone called it that, and maybe they do, but I realised that maybe they don’t when we were recently in Dunsborough.

I’d arranged to meet my friend at Little Meelup.  You can’t miss it, I said, just take the first turn off on the way to Meelup.

She missed it.

I’m in Dunsborough. Limited internet access but I confess even more limited enthusiasm for blogging, for anything technical really.

I’ve been reading, staring at the view, popping down to the beach for a dip, eating and doing sudoku… a lot of sudoku.

I’m here with Dippity, and I’ve discovered the way to Dippity’s contentment is finding her a good book, or at least, a book she’s prepared to read.

I found Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield in the bookcase.  A copy from my childhood.  It was a lovely story when it was written in 1936 and still is. 

Dipp devoured it in a couple of hours.

She is now reading City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, it will make do she says until we get back to Perth and she can read her brother’s copy of Eldest.

Two little kids

NeighboursWe went down south for the long weekend and ended up for part of the time on a winery close to where those two little kids went missing the weekend before.  At the time I couldn’t believe they could go missing so easily but the bush there is really thick, unbelievably so.
