The Bunbury experience

So last weekend was the weekend of the Bunbury Regatta – the first regatta in the Rowing WA calendar.

UWA Rowing decided to hold a camp – for the purposes of bonding primarily with a bit of a training day on the side.

It was well planned. Food was to be shoved down teenage throats to avoid alcohol overload. We were going to discuss goals, meet some of the other people who you normally don’t row with, staying at some cottages near Wellington Dam. Sounded fun. The masters women sounded keen on Bunbury. I paid my money.

Unfortunately they were keen on racing. Not keen on a camp out with a bunch of uni students. I was on my own.

The campfire was seriously good.

Luckily a couple of the masters men came down so I wasn’t the only old person there… well I was still at least 10 years older than the masters men but that’s better than 25 years older no?

The plan didn’t quite work out. The captain’s car – which contained the food – broke down. People started drinking at 3pm and by 7pm were not in a good way.

Still it was a fun night and by 6.15am the next morning our camp was deserted. We were on our way to Bunbury.

We were the first to arrive at about 7am. Cold, weary, some hungover, one blue.

This apparently is a record for UWA. We spread out on the foreshore. Unloaded boats. Rigged. Got coffee.

The rest of the Masters Women arrived around 8.15am. I had my posse back. Not that the younger set weren’t friendly. They were quite inclusive actually which was sweet of them.

Here are the Open Women.

Our squad was in three races… a coxed 8 – which we didn’t disgrace ourselves in but lets say there is room for improvement. And two coxed quads. Again room for improvement although our A-team nearly won their race.

I was tossing up whether to stay on the next night… but one of our squad was keen. It will show we want to be part of the club and not separate, she said. I stayed.

Unfortunately the bad behaviour from the night before caught up with us which meant the big “jungle” party where people were going to be cable tied together in order to force mingling between the groups was cancelled.  Thank goodness!

In our chalet we played Smoke or Fire – a ridiculous drinking card game.

My recommendation, should someone suggest it to you, is to politely but firmly decline.

I didn’t.

This is our cabin.

Kangaroos were very tame. One was seen holding a lollipop the morning before.

Breakfast was barbecue bacon and eggs. I should have passed on the bacon.

Overall it was worth going I think. A few more faces and names are familiar now. I feel more bonded with the club. And hanging out with young people does make you feel young, perhaps providing balance to the time I spend in the bridge club not hanging out with young people.

I really enjoyed the regatta.

And I think I want one of those onesies…

A religious moment

The Cathedral

I don’t go into churches often, except on holiday where churches are part of the tourism circuit or, you know, for weddings or funerals, but today I popped into the Bunbury Cathedral.

The new Bunbury Cathedral.

The old one was rendered unsafe by a mini-tornado in 2005 and had to be demolished.

You don’t see brand new cathedrals all that often and as I was in Bunbury I thought I’d check it out.

The windows from the outside

Rather than traditional stained glass, the Bishop has gone for more modern techniques.

Inside the glass is quite effective

The art is courtesy of Robert Juniper.  I say courtesy but I’m sure he was paid handsomely, and his signature is clearly on the artwork.

They were originally paintings which were photographed, blown up and the image inserted between panes of glass.

Much more cost effective – both initially and in terms of maintenance.

If a panel breaks you simply order another.

Close up inside

The alter piece is another Juniper piece depicting the resurrection.

This time the painting was transformed into a tapestry (made in some third world country).

Not a tyre

No signature evident here.

I did have to ask why there was a tyre in the bottom right corner didn’t I?

I guess I’ve seen too many tyres abandoned in the Australian outback.

It’s not a tyre of course, but the opening of the tomb.

My bad.

I thought it was rather a modern touch.

Ah well.

The alter

Meantime that’s Juniper in the red shirt.

It must be quite an honour to have your work chosen.

I loved the Australian-ness of it.

Inside, the Cathedral feels quite modern.

The font looks a bit like a plunge bath for the disabled and the entry isn’t as awe-inspiring as the cathedrals of Italy because you don’t go directly into the hall churchy bit.

Going past the gift shop just doesn’t feel the same.

In summary I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Or even, if I’m allowed to have an opinion.

Well it’s my blog.

So.

Some bits I liked.

I liked the alter piece (despite the tyre tomb).

I quite liked the artwork – though I didn’t like the fact that Juniper’s signature was so obvious – it just seemed a bit wrong in a church – not sure why. (unless of course it was donated then… maybe?)

I didn’t like the font or the brickwork.

Both more Uniting Church than Catholic I thought.

I did like the view – very impressive from up on the hill.

Looks less impressive in a photo

As I write this I’m wondering if I’m more fuddy duddy than I thought.

Is it my experience of old churches that is dampening my reaction.

It’s just…

It’s just I wanted to be inspired and I wasn’t.

And it left me feeling a bit disappointed.

Sigh.

Maybe if I was Catholic I’d feel differently.

After all it was made for the congregation, not me.

From the old Cathedral maybe?

Better days in Bunbury

The Lord Forrest Hotel has seen them.

bunburyhotelroom2

I’m in Bunbury for a meeting or several.  It’s a fairly quick drive from Perth.  About two hours and when the bypass gets completed even quicker.

I was thinking about staying down in Dunsborough but the extra hour is a killer, especially after a full day at work.

So I’m ensconsed in the Lord Forrest.

And the bedspreads have that eighties feel.

There’s a slight sag to the bed.

Outside the wind whistles past my window – with apparently an ocean view – it’s a windy night in our southern city.

In the foyer, the hanging gardens of Babylon and a swimming pool.

Now I know the quality of the photos isn’t up to my usual standard.  I took them with my phone.   But appreciate the lengths I went to get them.

But I’ve taken off my jeans and really I can’t be bothered putting them back on so I poke my head out of the door, carefully remembering to take my key.

Yes a key!  No electronic swipy thing for the Lord.

I can’t see anyone, although I can hear some blokey types doing that loud farewell thing blokes do when they’re on some kind of work thing and have a couple of drinks at the bar.

I sneak out in my undies and tee-shirt and snap a couple of photos.

Nothing happened.

I didn’t get caught.  Although there was a little moment when I couldn’t get the key out of the lock when I got back into my room.

I just wanted to let you know how important you are that I would risk discovery in my smalls.  (that aren’t that small by the way)

At least I wasn’t wearing my ENORMOUS scaffolding knickers.

Oh come on… everyone has a pair of those!

Don’t they?

Bunbury Christmas Tree

On a recent trip to Bunbury – two hours south of Perth – I spied this floral Christmas tree outside the Bunbury Arts Centre.
