Back to Fremantle

The scene at the Sail and Anchor in Fremantle on a Sunday afternoon

Our 18th wedding anniversary saw us head to Fremantle to celebrate.

We started at the Sail and Anchor where I have to say I was disappointed with the beer list… none of my favourites on it.

I ended up with a midi of Redback, Groover had an IPL which he was very happy with.

The table needed a good wipedown.

Luckily the company was good and the atmosphere convivial.

After the beer we went for a walk around the town.

It was Sunday afternoon busy and we wandered in and out of the shops along High St all the way down to the Roundhouse where we saw a bridal party right near the spot where we first kissed all those years ago in 1990.

The Whalers’ Tunnel is now closed but that night in January it was open and we explored it together in the balmy heat of an Australian summer.

After our walk we decided that Tapas at The Monk was the way to go.

They do THE BEST pork belly and scallops and they chop the squid up like french fries and serve it with a Thai dressing that is to die for.

We sat outside on the not-so-high stools and sampled the beer and a cheeky pinot noir that went down as easily as something that goes down really easily…

But Groover was craving another IPL so back to the Sail and Anchor we went for another round.

No pinot on the menu either so I settled for a Sav Blanc.

Sigh… such hardship.

Eighteen years is a long time and there have been times when it seemed impossible that we would be here together.

But here we are, Groover cleaning the pool, me about to sew a dress… the picture of domestic harmony.

Oh and the kids?

Banned from their computers.

Maybe not so harmonious after all.

🙂

A hairy situation

Hair malfunction

I came home the other day to find some ginger hair in the bathroom sink and the house as deserted as the Marie Celeste.

Then Groover came home – he’d had to make an emergency dash to the local electronic store to replace his clippers.

Where’s your beanie when you need it?

He could have worn his wig of course.

Old books and old friends

If you see me commuting by train this week – oh yes, I’m a train commuter now – you’ll spot me reading an ancient book my mother owned.

Billabong’s Daughter by Mary Grant Bruce.

I love the Billabong books but these days they are a bit politically incorrect.

Make that very non PC and I think the newer editions have been… sanitised.

It’s about a station in northern Victoria (I think) just after the First World War and the story is about the squatter Jim Linton and his family.

They act like the upper class might in England, dispensing largess to the lesser well off or should that be ‘orf’.

Far different to squatters of today who (for the most part) are the lesser well off.

There’s lots of cattle mustering and you do get a feel for the country back at the turn of the last century.

They are… quaint… I guess and part of the attraction to me is the fact that my mum used to love them when she was a gel.

Commuting with Billabong has been great so far, although the walk home can be a bit warm.

The five day liquid only diet has come to an end.

I’m not sure I’ll willingly do it again.

And I don’t think I’ve lost any weight which I’m disappointed in. I rather hoped I might kick off my new year a bit slimmer. Sigh.

Work has been busy but I must confess sitting the heat out in office air-conditioning has been pleasant.

On the last Sunday before I had to go back to work I went out for drinks at Salt, down at Port Beach with some friends.

The liquid-only diet doesn’t preclude alcohol but I did limit myself to just the one beer. 🙂

We met this couple nearly ten years ago in Bali – we scabbed a lift to Club Med with them – and since then we’ve become close friends.

Salt is great on a sunny Sunday afternoon. They have someone singing… the food is (looks) great and the beer is cold.

They style themselves as a nano-brewery and I tried the wheat beer – the Heifweisen (or something like that).

I enjoyed it.

Next time I want to try the pizza.

A little perspective

I took this photo down on the foreshore of the river a few days ago.

Yes that’s my 14 year old – year 10 boy – sitting on the shoulders of his 11 year old – year 7 sister.

She’s almost as tall as him too.

It works rather well to have the boy first I’ve decided.

Boys tend to lag behind the girls in the development department – or girls mature faster – so they end up much closer in physical age than if the order was reversed.

Of course it means Groover and I have to continually remind ourselves that Dippity is only 11 – which is tough when she behaves like a sulky teenager.

Lazy sometimes and then you remember that you aren’t always the bundle of energy you’d like to be either. Shhh but don’t tell them that.

This year, Hugamuga has moved into the senior school and Dipp is now in middle school.  Both I think are relishing the change.

I even spied Hugamuga doing homework tonight – without being asked.  Impressive.

I feel blessed.

It was a tough day at work today but coming home to my little family felt good.

And the Singah beer did too. 🙂

Oktoberfest or Ocsober

Ironic really that October is chosen for two “festivals” which have exactly polar opposite objectives.

Oktoberfest – that German celebration of beer – which we celebrated last night at the University Club – complete with German dancers and Oom Pa Pa music, sauerkraut and sausages… and what’s with the cut up socks?
