Lycra and lots of food

The last two days in Ubud have been “activity” days.

Yesterday we did the Paon Bali Cooking class and today the Bali Baik downhill cycle.

We're ready to cook

The cooking class started with a visit to Ubud markets, then a stop at the padi fields before we were invited into our hosts home.

Wayan gave us a tour of his home – explaining each of the buildings – and how it all fits into their Hindu religion and then we went to the big outdoor kitchen and were fitted out with aprons.

It was a fabulous experience and the food.

Well lets just say I’ll be on a strict regime on my return.

Luckily the next day we went cycling.

Our cycling crew

Well I say cycling but in reality it was sitting on a bike rolling down hill.

Rolling through picturesque villages, and padi fields, dodging the scooters, ducks and dogs.

Seeing as the brochure says – the real Bali.

Afterwards our tour guides laid on a lovely Balinese meal and undid all our good work.

Heaven.

Oh and we got to drink coffee excreted from a cat.

Now you can’t get more real than that!

A high class problem

Breakfast at Scene
The last two mornings we’ve had a picnic breakfast delivered to our villa.

The butlers come with the baskets and set up the table in the gazebo with fresh fruit, plunger coffee, bakery items, cheese and cold cuts.

But here’s the thing.

Eggs taste best eaten within seconds from being taken off the stove.

And plunger coffee?

Shudder.

So despite the convenience and luxeness of having our breakfast delivered, this morning we wandered up to the restaurant.

Espresso coffee.

And yes I don’t look my best in the morning.

But ahhh, it is worth it.

For the coffee alone – worth it.

Delightful.

Markets, Massage and Mozaic

How good is Bali?

It’s just so relaxed and friendly.

Breakfast in the gazebo

Okay I am staying in a luxury villa with hot and cold running butlers – which incidentally costs less per night than a dodgy motel in Karratha – but even so.

This morning we were woken by our butler carrying our picnic breakfast which he set up in our private gazebo.

We wandered out in our kimonos and chilled out with our tropical fruit juices reading the little “compilation” newspaper.

Then we went to central Ubud to the markets where it took a little while to get into the bargaining thing.

Ubud markets

The exchange rate is terrific right now and I needed reminding that really I was talking the difference between 5 and 6 dollars for a dress.

We then went for suckling pig everyone tells you to try if you go to Ubud… opposite the Palace, don’t miss it, you sit on grass mats, and the crackling is the best I’ve ever tasted…

Well I wouldn’t go that far – I can make mean crackling – but the pork is delicious and the Bintang cool and refreshing on a warm day after an hours frantic bargaining.

We got back to the villa in time for a little swim in our private pool and relax before calling for the electric buggy to take us down to the spa.

overlooking the Ayung River

The massage room overlooks the Ayung River and the little black undies they give you are hilarious… more hilarious on Groover it must be said.

The massage was lovely.

Afterwards we grabbed umbrellas to shield us from the afternoon downpour and strolled among the frogs to the restaurant for afternoon tea – or in this case double shot espressos.

Then the buggy again to take us back to our villa.

Tonight we went to dinner at Mozaic – apparently the most famous restaurant in Ubud (probably after that suckling pig place the name of which I can’t remember).

We had the discovery degustation menu and the premium wine selection which was gorgeous.

It is heaven here.

And you know what?

Some people live like this all the time.

Sigh.

Imagine that.

Holiday to Bali – My job

At the airport.

When travelling Groover and I share the responsibilities.

He books everything and I fill out the forms.

Me. Doing what I do best.

I thought that was unique to us but having coffee at the airport this morning filling out our exit forms for immigration, I discovered this is a common division of labour.

Several of my travelling sisters were engaged in filling out forms while their menkind browsed the duty free.

Oh and probably one or two other things…

We went up to Mt Coot-tha for the spectacular views.

Photo essay from Esperance

The colour and clarity of the Southern Ocean is to die for.

I love Esperance.

The water is so beautiful, the beaches so white, the rocky outcrops so… rocky.

If only the sharks weren’t so big, the water temperature so low, the wind so… windy.

Of course being a bit of a space geek I also love that Skylab fell on Esperance.

Seen on the side of the Skylab museum

I’ve been meaning to go to the Skylab exhibit each time I visit… maybe next time.

The museum is open from 1.30 to 4.30.

I wonder about this advertising campaign though.

Are they promoting the fact they have very officious rangers?

Not much litter around though so perhaps Keep Australia Beautiful should think about a similar campaign:

“Don’t litter or we’ll sic the Esperance rangers on you!”

An amuse bouche on the menu at the Tearooms

This did amuse me as I ordered my bacon and scrambled eggs and long black coffee.

Oh which reminds me of the coffee I had in Mandurah on the weekend – I asked for a long black and clearly confused the waitress who served my black coffee in a tall clear glass. LOL

The view across the bay from the Tearooms.

It was 37 degrees in Perth this day and about 25 in Esperance.  Mild and overcast.

The pine trees were planted as a navigational aid – you can kind of see why here.

Ahhh Esperance.

I hope to come back soon and next time maybe go to see what’s left of Skylab.

Can you help name this wildflower?

What is this called?

Yesterday I asked for your help in naming the flowers I photographed on my recent trip to Dunsborough.

Wildflowers in Dunsborough are tiny treasures

I know that I am somewhat parochial when it comes to the wonders of Western Australia.

This will come as no surprise to you.

We are carrying the nation at the moment of course and some of our natural features are extraordinary:

Purnalulu, Karajini, whale sharks to name a few.

And of course our wonderful wildflowers.

Mostly when you say wildflowers people think of the carpet of flowers that spreads across the midwest, but this time of year the southern forests are a treasure trove.

No wonder pioneer Georgiana Molloy got so excited.

If you can help me with the names of some of the others I’d love you for it.

Tripping the light not-so fantastic

I love the Council House lightshow and when showing visitors around I will always point it out – if I’m near the city.

The other day for instance I drove my eastern states colleague back to his hotel and driving past Kings Park I thought a little detour was in order.

He made the usual appreciative noises about the view – which is pretty spectacular – and I, pointed out Council House.

“See that building down there lit up in pink”, I said, “Well the City spent millions on this great lightshow and I really love it. Any minute now it will change colour. ”

“It’s soooo beautiful!” I enthused.

And we waited.

And waited.

And waited.

But the building remained stubbornly pink.

And I shamefacedly drove down the hill and dropped him off.

Two nights later I was driving back from bridge – State Open Teams – we’re coming last – and I noticed that the building was STILL pink!

What the hell?

Was it broken?

So I rang up the City of Perth (as you do) and asked them.

Turns out if you’re a not-for-profit or charity you can book the light show.

This week, apparently, the light show has been commandeered by the Pink Ribbon Day crowd.

You know, for breast cancer.

And get this… it’s free!

Well… unless you want a complicated show that is when it costs you the time it takes to program in the lights… maybe $50 the fellow told me.

And it can be quite complicated – words scrolling across the building for example.

I was blown away.

But, I’m afraid, still a little bit pissed off that the “proper” light show wasn’t on when I wanted to show off to my colleague.

But that’s just me.

Selfish.

Breast cancer research is a good cause – I just kind of wish they’d paid the $50 and put on a show.

My Sydney adventure in photos

Finally, I have pulled my finger out of my nether regions and got around to posting some photos from our trip to Sydney… last month!

My baby waits for the Chaser to start.

One of the highlights was popping into Ultimo and watching the final Chaser recorded.

For the final they were on the set of At the Movies.

We managed to find the only seats in the audience that are never shown on film.

One of the highlights for me was watching the camera crew.

I’m really only familiar with news studios and in them the cameras are pretty much fixed in place.

On the Chaser set they are moving all the time – it’s quite exciting to watch.

So when you forget your adapter - and you have a US charger - look what you can use!

I know, I know… and odd thing to throw in but it was such a great tip from my living-in-America sister and I had forgotton my adapter.

My sister and me.

Speaking of my sister… I do look rather tanned but that could have been the make-up…

The girls LOVED Wicked! (and I did too)

We went to see Wicked! And I heartily recommend it – really good fun for all ages… well… maybe not really little ones… and it is better if you are familiar with the story of the Wizard of Oz… but who isn’t?

So now to the exhibition… and I have to start with the one portrait of me.

I ask you… is it really fair to immortalise us in oil???

A highlight for Dippity was teaching her one year old cousin how to high five.

Gil and I lived together 20 years ago when I moved to Sydney - we used to hang out at a nightclub called Rogues... anyone remember it?

So yeah… Rogues… anyone remember it?

We had a blast dancing there back in the day… er… somewhere around 1990… OMG I am SO old!

I recall wearing a tight dress by George with tassles all over it… ah but that might have to be talked about another day…
