A religious experience

Where do you think this church is?

It could be in Europe – a sunny part obviously – it could be in South America or Mexico.

It’s in Mullewa, about an hour east of Geraldton in the midwest.

Coming across this church as the sun set on Wednesday was surreal.

I had driven up with the new manager of the Geraldton station, he’s been in the UK for the last couple of decades so we took the inland route to familiarise him with the midwest.

It had been a long drive, meeting some of the locals and we were way behind our frankly unrealistic schedule.

I was waiting for a tumbleweed to roll past.

It honestly felt as if we had traveled across the world.

  1. I wanted to comment earlier – but didn’t get the chance…
I’ve been marvelling at Monsignor Hawes’s designs and buildings for years given my travel through that region. You’d be amazed at the effect he’s had over such a time and region.

Gero – given the Cathedral and Nazareth House, Mullewa and then Tardun… all through the wheat belt and out to the homestead at Wiluna – not to mention heaps more.

It’s an amazing sight… quite sureal and almost out of place.
Or maybe it’s just a trick of that good old wheatbelt light… 😉
