The Dress Project – part 1

Inspired by Project Runway, a colleague and I are determined to learn how to sew and even – you know – make something.

So today I went to a fabric shop in Subiaco and picked out a pattern and with the help of the shop assistant got all the bits I need to make it (talent not included).

I found a whole list of patterns and this one was set aside as being a little more difficult for a rusty seamstress but hey what’s life without a challenge eh?

I also chose a slightly stretchy fabric called… well it sounded a bit like Bangalore but I don’t think that’s it.  Stretch makes it a bit harder.

And after the fabric was cut I realised I also needed a lining fabric and that’s not stretchy so it will probably all end in tears.

At the moment though I’m quite excited by the challenge  – I haven’t sewn a dress from a pattern for years, probably since university, which would make it about 1987!

I’m the sort of person who loves to do the odd crafty thing but rarely stick at it.  So I have knitted one jumper, made two teddy bears, that sort of thing.  I also get bored easily so the task has to be challenging which is why it wasn’t just a jumper but a jumper in a dinasaur pattern.

So far this project has cost me $56.

Not sure if it’s the most economic way to get a new dress but we’ll see.  🙂

  1. $56? Well, I guess it’s a bargain if you love the dress and want to make it in a few different colors. You could always change it up a little bit.

My sewing machine is messed up but when I was working I used to love to create things. I once made a jumper that I actually wore. LOL

  2. Wow, good luck with this. I’ve never been able to sew. That’s what credit cards are for, buying stuff that’s already put together! Make sure to let us know how it turns out!

  3. I agree Elsa, so far this project is far from economical.

I’m a bit worried that in the end I’ll have a poorly made expensive dress.

In the mean time it’s been quite satisfying doing the bodice so far… I’m just a tad worried I’m going to be too fat for it!

Another reason to get up and go for a walk Casey!

The question is – does the time I spend on it count towards the cost of the dress – or take away from it in that it’s keeping me entertained?

  4. I like to think I’m a seamstress, but I’m not. I can be dangerous behind the sewing machine, just not good and dangerous.

And CLUB HAYSAY? Things didn’t exactly go as planned this week. I’m pretending it starts tomorrow. 🙂

  5. I have also caught the sewing bug of late, picking up my sewing machine from mum`s which I used approximately 5 times when I was about 9 or 10 and received it for my birthday.

I am in the process of making a top- but I am also getting lessons cos I REALLY suck. I didn`t even know you needed to use a different foot for a zip until very recently. So there you go!

Best of luck with it- I hope it turns out to be a really nice expensive dress.

The top if you add the material, cotton & pattern together it comes to about 28 dollars. Not to bad- but I also had to buy scissors, fabric pen, unpicker, needles and bobbins making it a bit more expensive.

Can`t wait to see the finished product!

  6. I’m pretty sure the last clothing items I ever made were my girls high school summer dresses. (The summer mini dresses for me don’t count since I never wore them). Since then my sewing machine has been used to patch knees on jeans, make kitchen curtains and turn sheets sides to middle.

  7. I have tried my hand at sewing a quilt for a friend’s wedding gift only to realize how much I hate it. I wish you so much luck with this! HASAY will be fit to be tied tomorrow when I post my update. Maybe I should think about the enormous stress I was under while learning to work the sewing machine and that will burn calories..
