Sleeping bag cover up!

by Cellobella on Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Dippity is going camping. Her first camp with her new school. She’s pretty excited but a little worried that she won’t be able to get her sleeping bag into its bag. And I don’t blame her.

What is it with sleeping bag makers!

Why can’t they design a bag that makes it easy for a kid use?

Now sure, I could have TMATP* and bought a down filled stuff-in sleeping bag. I have one of those myself and they are great. Warm, compact and best of all easy to store in its little bag. Instead I decided to cut the price tag by more than half and buy a very warm, good quality bag that you need to roll up and put in its bag. IMPOSSIBLE.

It’s hard enough for me, let alone a 11 year old.

Having been on quite a number of school camps you can assure her, they always manage to get back in the bag. It is a mystery to me, as it was one of my deep seated fears, somehow, as though there is a magic school camp fairy, it happens.

Do the best you can and then stuff like crazy, is the way it works.

My oldest duaghter is off on school camp at the moment…and we spent a good hour on Sunday working out how to get the sleeping bag back into its bag. The salesperson had assured us it was just a case of ‘scrunch and turn’. But we scrunched and turned…and a good third of the bag was still hanging out the end of the cover. Eventually through sheer scrunch and turn force we managed it. I’m not sure how she’ll go on her own though.

One option that I ended up with (after the original bag cover died) buy a slighly bigger stuff sack for the existing bag! It fits in much easier now :) although stuff sacks aren’t exactly cheep

Smooth the sleeping bag as flat as you can, fold in half lengthways, roll tightly then hold it tight while a friend eases the cover on. Have fun practising, she’ll get the hang of it in no time.
