How the USA is different to Australia

by Cellobella on Saturday, February 9, 2008

Apart from having “real” lemonade instead of Sprite lemonade – how I miss it! – the other obvious difference between the USA and Australia as viewed from the road is the preponderance of water tanks – often brightly coloured.

Here are some of the ones we passed on our recent trip. I think they’re kinda kooky. They also reminded me of the tripods in War of the Worlds – maybe that’s where H.G. Wells got his inspiration? I’m a genius!

Thanks for the E…I’ll definitely pass it on…you know, right after I’ve finished the other memes all waiting there as draft posts. I’m hopeless.

The design of your blog is getting more and more amazing (note to self: must spend less time reading only through bloglines).

…I meant to say first up, I love those tanks…

Yep, the ol’ water tower. :)

There’s a section of freeway not too far from here where there’s three or four of them in the space of about a mile. I think it’s an unofficial requirement to be a village or city to have a water tower. ;)

They used to be quite simple – the city name printed out in block letters, but now it’s more of a marketing tool for that town…

Those tanks are a great idea. Pity Australia doesn’t have them everywhere, that’s one thing I wouldn’t mind copying from the Americans.

Interesting… I found them quite imposing – you can see them for miles on a flat road or just when you least expect it when it’s a bit hillier. Almost threatening.

But some of them had great kitchy decoration. :)

And thanks Thirdcat – hmmm I’m not too sure about this one – it’s elegant but just a bit… plain…

How interesting. How do they fill them? And what is their purpose? I’m assuming they’re filled via pipes. Is it something to do with being able to maintain water pressure?

we have similar water tanks in western australia dotted about the suburbs – north and south. they are not as “beautifully” decorated as the US ones tho!
