Blogiversary

by Cellobella on Tuesday, October 9, 2007

I’ve been noticing a number of my favourite blogs have been celebrating Blogiversaries lately (congratulations) and it got me to thinking… when would mine be?

I first set up redsultana.com way back on August 31, 2002. At that point it was a tables html website on which I put photos and occasional news… which I overwrote as I updated. On June 17, 2003, I redesigned the site and manually blogged… if you could call it that, manually making archive pages…

On August 1st, 2004 I set up my first blogger account and moved the front page of redsultana.com to a blogging interface.

Then January 7, 2007 I moved to WordPress and this current incarnation of Sultanablog was born.

So what then is my blogiversary?

Your thoughts? In the poll on the right or in comments please. :)

Wow – I’m impressed. I voted for the earliest date. That really would have been a labour of love…

Thank you. I was in love with making (simple) websites… I thought I was cutting edge. I wasn’t. :) But was it a blog?

Well, I suppose it could be argued it wasn’t a blog – technically.

But to me it was on the web, and it recorded your thoughts/news in reverse chronological order (except in this instance the newer entries rewrote the older ones). I suppose if you wanted to play it by the modern day definition then 2003 would be more compliant, but in my book (computer!) the earlier date would qualify. “Pioneer” was the word I was looking for last night.

The shame of it (and the advantage of “proper” blogs) is that I don’t have a record of that first year. :)

BTW – it’s thanks to your post on security that helped me find that original date.  So thanks!

It is a shame you don’t have a record of your past sites. Check web.archive.org they might have some old archives of your site.

I went with August 1st for the official Blogiversary. I missed mine, but the widget up and all and forgot the day *opps*

I had a manual website set up in, say ’96-7. It had some dodgy photos I’d converted to anaglyph 3D using some very distant ancestor of photoshop. But it wasn’t a blog.
The first thing I did that would qualify as blogging would be when I used to maintain the local Ultimate Frisbee site, and I’d put in weekly entries about that day’s game; that would have been in ’99 or so but then I had an injury and kind of stopped playing.
I started on Blogger in late 03, after doing it in word docs for six months.
I voted for the 03 date. Whether it was on blogger or not, it was still some kind of online journal. That’s a weblog.

I miss one alternative in your poll. “all of the above”. Considering it is different stages in a longer process, why not celebrate them all?
